Target "lock-on" 50 versus the 70?

I've had both and one of my frustrations with the 70 was the rather jumpy ID compared to the 50 at the same sites. Digger's post was right on about the 50 and TID. Both detectors found coins after my CZ-70 but I found hunting with the 50 more pleasant and less tedious compared to the 70 and of course especially my Explorer II. The increased segments of the 70 creates this issue for the most part I'm sure. I was just wondering how my experience compares to others who have had both or all three X-terras?

Chris,

I think much of how you might feel about this is both an attitude & application. I know some people get their panties in a bunch if a quarter on the X70 bounces between 40 & 42. Personally it doesn't bother me a bit. Where I hunt there is generally old stuff if I'm not beach hunting, therefore if I get anything in the copper/silver range, I'm digging it up. Coins at an angle, coins mixed with small bits of trash, silver jewelry etc can give slightly different readings. So if I adopt the attitude that I'm only hunting 42's for quarters, then I may leave an antique silver ring in the ground that ID's 40, bad idea in my opinion. I'm not really a clad shooter, but if I have to dig up some battery money while looking for silver I'm OK with that.

Now for another example, many places I hunt have a wide variety of .22 cal cartridges. Just for easy juxtaposition, the X30 would probably ID these various cartridges as an ID 12, nickel or gold ring. Whereas with the X70 it will vary 10, 12, 14 therefore giving suspicion that it is a .22 cart. If there aren't many of these .22 carts in an area I'll just dig them up. But if I'm spending more than 50% of my time digging them, then the X70 with it's more detailed ID is a help.

Honestly, it's not that the target would bounce from 40-42 for a quarter but all over the place comparing my 70 to my 50. I noticed the same thing when pinpointing, the TID would be all over the place with the 70. I've only had one 70(new) with the stock 7.5 coil so I keep thinking that maybe mine had a coil issue most likely. I did super with the 50, the 70 was just a different animal I guess. I'm just trying to decide to buy another 50 or probably a 70 since so many new coils have come out since my last time I had an Xterra. Happy New Year! Thanks...HH

I use the 70.

For the most part I am looking for the deep stuff and since I am in Europe also low conductors. The worst combination there is, deep/low conductors.

After a while You should have no problem to pick a solid lock on even if it jumps a few numbers and if its the higher part of the scale i would go by lock on only, not a specific number to pick. Dig all lock ons.

In the lower end its usually different especially if its deep. Its more like the lock on is above ferrous, numbers can vary much in each direction but you get a pretty good idea its something else then ferrous.

Prospecting mode have helped me much and have made me love the 70 more then before I learned to use it.

Got your point i think.

If its bouncing more then 2 nrs on a 5 inch coin i would say there is something wrong with the hardware.

The 50 and 70 should be comparable in that respect.

If its not a tracking problem....You probably got that straight.

Would hate to see You lose out on this detector, Minelab will fix it if its something wrong.

Christopher,

You had to have something really whacked to get that kind of variance, bad coil, bad connector, or an insane amount of interference.
