target is not where the signal is

I went out for a couple of hours this past weekend and started digging found a penny and a bunch of caps and foil, but I am having trouble pinpointing on many of the targets,I have tried all the different ways to pinpoint. When I get a signal, I pinpoint ,then dig, recheck the hole and still have signal, dig some more recheck and nothing then search the area around the whole get the same type of signal and dig up a cap or tab next to original hole, I have read how the coil works and watched the videos but cant seem to figure out whats happening the signals seem to be repeatable enough. Something else that happens is when using the pinpoint button , you find the peak, move forward or back, the signal doesn't drop off, that doesn't happen all the time but enough to question.Any help would be great before I buy a backhoe and bulldozer.

The wedge on the coil is we're the windings are don't worry about the outer frame of the coil it's only for structural support, I would pp with the tip of the wedge and see if that helps,

Boomer....I am having the same issue and i have had my machine for over a year. I am finding that the target is actually about 3-4 inches off when I pinpoint from the tip. I find a target...press pinpoint and when all the bars are showing at the tip the target should be right there...unfortunately the target is either to the left side of the coil or just in front of where the lower shaft connects to the coil. I have emailed Garrett but have yet to hear back. I guess I'll have to send it in. It sucks when I'm park hunting becaus I end up with these big holes to recover the target...not fun.

If the target does not pinpoint well, that is a clue it could be a bottlecap. Use iron audio and the bottlecaps really show up. Surface targets can sound off on the edge of the coil. You can lift the coil a few inches and it will center easier.

All pennies at 2-3 inches that I dug.

My pinpointing is usually right on if I do the "x marks the spot" technique, though I usually just pinpoint off the tip for shallow targets, then use the ProPointer to check before digging. My AT Pro also has the issue where the signal often doesn't drop off when you move it away from the center - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I will be sending it in for another issue once I get my AT Gold, and I'll ask them to look into that issue while it's at the Garrett spa.

I know that if you are not ground balanced correctly that can throw off the pinpointing. Make sure you get a good ground balance and see if the pinpointing improves any.

When you pinpoint with the pinpoint button it's supposed to be right in front of the lower shaft when you max out the bars. Do it twice at 90 degrees at it will be dead on usually. If you wiggle while pulling back when the signal stops it should be right off the tip.

I doubt there's any problem with the machine. I had a bit of a learning curve with the double d coil before I felt comfortable pinpointing and I'm still not perfect every time. I have heard the concentric coils are easier to learn. Sometimes the coin is tilted and the machine is very sensitive. You can try to lower the sensitivity, but lifting the coil has about the same effect. If there is trash items nearby, these will affect the pinpoint. Metal in your shoes, too. You might go back and watch the training videos again as they show a couple different techniques. They are online at Garrett.

Thanks for the info...it's been about a year that I've had the machine and thought I had it down pretty well...watching the videos again is a great idea!

I know it's harder to pinpoint than my old White's concentric, but I just made it a point to try a little harder to get it. I check a little wider area and see if I got it right. Sometimes it's not right where I thought it was. Now I rarely use a pinpointer although there are times I could use one. The beaver tails on edge get me.

It's a good bet that a high percentage of the coins that are left at the hammered sites are not laying flat. That will throw off the pinpoint accuracy. So you are probably doing things correctly. I've heard of people tilting the coil to get a better view of the target but I'm not that skilled.

Sounds like you might need a Garrett Pro-Pointer, hand held. It makes locating
the target easy. Save you loads of time.

This video looks pretty good on pinpointing with the AT DD coil:

Pinpointing Techniques with Garrett's 8.5"x11" DD Coil

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-hqvdjRVxc

I have never used a DD coil, but this video echos what I have always read about pinpointing with one.

My DD coils are dead on with the Pinpointing...I have a bit of trouble with the 9x12 Ellipticle on deep targets...Just because of the size of the hot spot...

HH,

I have put in much more time on getting pp down this week, after reading the posts I figured it was me and not the detector, holy crap my holes went from 3ft down to softball size and there was metal in them I have found 15 or 20 coins which has been great for the morale, thank you very much for the advice and answering the post i will update when i get out again

Good to hear you are making progress. Finding the target on the toe or heel of the coil is a very good way for those hard to get surface targets.

Just to update....ran several tests and pinpoint is off on my machine. Spoke with Garrett and they are shipping me a new coil to see if that solves the problem.

I noticed I was having some pinpoint issues yesterday. I took off my coil cover (be very careful if you try this yourself-they can break easily if you're not VERY gentle) to find lots of mineral pieces trapped in between he coil cover and the coil itself.

I washed the coil and the cover under the sink with a brush, and re-attached the cover. Since cleaning it out, my pinpoints have been dead on. The places where the pinpointing is not dead on (after cleaning), I do the 90 degree rotate method of pinpointing and they are dead on. I've noticed if I'm hunting in highly mineralized soil that the pinpointing isn't always dead on, but if I use the 90 degree method it is dead on almost 100% of the time.

My GB numbers range from 80-93 depending on the area I'm hunting. Please update us as to the fix to the problem, because that seemed to work for me. I'm gonna try another hunt today and see how mine is working. It may just become a regular habit to carefully clean the detector coil apparatus after every hunt for me.

HH
