target ID won't move????

When I'm scanning w/ my XS, the x-hairs won't move if the tone changes. At least not all the time. Sometimes it moves instantly and sometimes not at all(unless I move it away from the new hit and then back) Also I'm worried I'm not using enough sensitivity. Most all my stuff is shallow....6" or less. Could there be no deep targets????
Settings:
Vol--10
Tone Diff--10
Thresh--5~7
Gain--5
Sensitivity-- 20~25 semi-auto
Recovery--FAST&DEEP
Response--NORMAL
Select--COINS/JEWELRY checked
Select--FECOINS/NAILS blank
Select--CROWNCAPS/SCREWCAPS/PULLTABS/FOIL X'ed
Auto Noise Adjust at beginning of hunt
Soil-- North Carolina RED CLAY!!!!also searching in Chrusher Run Gravel
slow sweep--.5 to 2.0 ft/sec
Some Nulling with good hits in the Nulls at times
I can't think of anything else I've messed with.I haven't messed with the IRON MASK either. Batteries are charged. Don't understand the lack of anything deep on the depth meter. I suppose I could be missing faint sounds but my hearing is pretty good. I've read all these things found at 10",12",14" but I'm not getting anything that deep(I don't think).

try upping the gain to 6 or 7, the curser wont move to the correct position unless the threshold returns, so sometimes you need to lift the coil away from the ground after passing the signal to get a correct reading, go slow that red clay is nasty stuff, bit you should be able to get stuff in the 8 to 10 inch range on coin sized targets

I see you run your senitivty at 25 semi auto, when i started i could barely get a wheat penny at 6 inches, i was ready to throw the explorer in the trash, then I ran into fellow explorer user, he did everything i did execpt he had timber wolf headphones, and ran his senitivity at manual 26, well i bumped my senitivity up to manual 26, and sometimes 32 auto, with the stocck 10.5 coil, what a differance, now i'm getting coils in the 10 inch range, very soft but there. i had buried a coil in my back yard at 6.5 inches, and experiment with settings, 10.5 inch coil and manual senitivity picks the coin up the best, i found if i swing to slow the coin nulls out. hope this helps, dave

The target id problem is standard. Most of us go almost exclusively by the sounds. They dont lie the screen will. The screen will lock onto the strongest target and not reset until you get a clear threshold back so you may have a good target and not be able to see it on screen. One trick is to find the good sound then raise the coil until the threashold returns then lower it down to the target. Like wise the depth will be to the closest target.
The higher the sensitivity the deeper it will go. Also more gain is better if the area will allow. Ironmask will give more depth but also more noise. Also the single most important thing is swing speed . Slow down to about 1 second per foot. The machine has the depth you just need to find how to achieve it.

Another trick... If you can hear the target, wiggle the coil back and forth so that you repeatedly hear the hit. Sometimes it will ID it while you wiggle - sometimes if you lift the coil it will ID and lock.
