Target Found In Search, It Won't Pinpoint w/Tone

Well-known member
My V3i reads a target at depths beyond 7" in search. Then, I can't get the tone/audio to work in pin point mode, even though the color bars seem to respond in part that there's something down there. I am not puling the switch while over the target, I've detected for months with another model and know how PP should work.

Is there a power boost for the PP mode? I always assumed that the PP mode was running wide open on metals and was smokin' in power. Why can I read a target in search, and then not get tone in pinpoint? Don't make sense. tia. martin

Is there a power boost for the PP mode? Adjust the all metal higher.

Why can I read a target in search, and then not get tone in pinpoint? You have been told to start the pin point off to the side not over the target by others.

The search can be reading wrong in that situation. Many times it is just a deep piece of iron. Having your electronic background you know that iron and nails pin point off to the side. So you can get a good reading but you are not over a target, the nail is off some where to the side. Deep targets that don't pin point are usually iron. I hunt for deep targets and have my all metal set to 70 and for my deepest program I run 75.

It's hard to tell what you are doing but pin pointing is not a common problem we hear about much.

I appreciated an answer. I've pin pointed using my 5900 for months and I know the "You have been told to start the pin point off to the side not over the target by others" very well, that is not my problem, others besides me have the same results as well, just no answers that fix it. Tell me simply this, "If the V3i tones a target fine at 7, 8, 9" and above during coil swings?, shouldn't the pin point mode read that just as well, no matter if it's iron? I've never had tone in PP at those depths, and "never" is a strong statement to make for me. martin

"If the V3i tones a target fine at 7, 8, 9" and above during coil swings?, shouldn't the pin point mode read that just as well, no matter if it's iron? Yes if there is a target there. Have you dug and found anything? If not, that could be why it won't pin point. It was false reading.

I've searched OUR forum and can't find anyone else with your problem. I know of no one who can't get their V3i to pin point at 7, 8 , or 9 inches. If others are having this problem please let me know.

There is nothing I could possibility add to what the other people have told you. You seem to be having more trouble than most people. If you have followed all the advice you have been given, and it hasn't helped you should see your local dealer where you bought your new V. They are a great hands on help.

What is your All Metal Sensitivity set at? That is the ONLY adjustment that determines how deep your pinpoint will go. The higher the Sensitivity the deeper the pinpoint will go.

Everyone of the phantom targets that in search has shown me and PP wouldn't has been iron, I have tried digging a few . If you want proof for yourself then in search mode find the target and wiggle the coil tight above it and pull back the coil till the search target drops off and dig in front of the coil with a bigger than normal size hole and see for yourself. This should answer your question .H.H. Yazoo

Are you sure there is really a target there? One other possibility is that your RX gain is set way too high, causing false signals. When you pull back the trigger, you will not get any tone if there is no target.

Just another idea to try.

You've been very patient, I really appreciate that. I am hoping to incorporate the help of another V3i owner locally to do apples to apples for me. The weekend should hopefully settle my mind over what I think I am seeing. Logical gremlins I hope. I really don't want to mail off a new detector after just a few short weeks.

Neil In West Jersey...no I don't know for sure if there's a target there, I am relying on the response I get from at least 2 swings in a row with the V3i in search mode before pin pointing. Heck, I might even be getting EMI or something in-between. My RX gain is 7, using the C&J factory. I have left the all metal running at 55 most of the time though. martin

It sounds like you are doing everything right and if pinpoint doesn't pick it up, it would be safe to say there was nothing there.

Hi Martin,
I've followed your posts here and on another forum and know that you are having one heck of a time.

I'm fairly new with the V3i and have only had it since July. It took me nearly a month and a half before it finally clicked for me, so don't consider me an expert or someone who know's what they are talking about.

I'm wondering what role Recovery Delay may paly in this. The reason I bring this up is that I remember laying 2 targets (both coins) on top of the ground when I first got the "V" and noticed that I could get a hit on both targets in "1" sweep direction, but only get a hit on "1" target on the return. Just wondering if the target that you are getting is directly under your coil when you hear the audio or is the coil actually past the target when the audion sounds off.

Might be something to look into.

Good Luck to you and I know some of the frustration that you are going through although not with any of the problems that you are experiencing.

Could be the delay setting. The C&J and COIN program has always given me a good report below 6". Should it be adjusted for the deeper target searches? Thanks. martin

Followup question: If I find this target in search, get only a tone in one direction swing, mark the spot physically and then come back and begin my swings in ONLY the not-tone direction from before and still not get tone, then can I assume that the delay has nothing to do with it? I may end up physically reversing the mount of the coil(backwards) and see if the ability of the tone switches to the other side. martin

Martin, I don't know if it is delay related.

It was just a thought and was hoping that someone could reply to my post if it could be related.

I don't want to get you anymore befuddled than you are at the present time. Maybe someone can chime in if delay settings can cause your proble.

In past experience with the E-Trac that I had and presently with the V3i that I have now, a one way signal was most always an iron target and when I would pinpoint, the center of pinpoint would farther away than what I had noticed with either machine.

Sorry I can't be of any help and again I don't want to add any confusion.

Although I have had my Vision upgraded to V3i - seems to me back before the the upgrade and early on (new then), there were a few times when I went to pinpoint a target I didn't get a tone. I think what was happening to me then, I was too fast on the trigger going from the Analyze, through Search, to Pinpoint (snapping from Analyze > Pinpoint). When it didn't go right, I would again analyze the target, then get the coil off the side, and while holding the coil still, , center the trigger (search) and pause, then pull the trigger for pinpoint, pause before moving the coil. The pause and on triggering while holding the coil still seem to do it.
Then again, I also had a couple time that when I was pinpointing, when I got the strongest signal, I would move the coil away from the target and it wouldn't drop off - even when I swung the coil way off the side, and when I raised the coil up waist high - like it was stuck until I released the trigger, and I was getting full blast audio that wouldn't lessen until I released the trigger.
I had done program resets, even pulled the battery pack during operation etc.
When contacting Whites, of course their first recommendation was batteries, but I had already been there, done that.
I had to have my detector sent back (with headphones - was having headphones issues sometimes).

But all this was on the early stage (Vision) and Whites dealt with it. They also replaced my headphones - I never did get told what the problem, but I never asked either.

When the problem first started, I had changed batteries (a few times), then changed frequencies and headphone channels, then tried a different areas (maybe EMI mix), and after a few quirks in about a month or so, I had no choice than to contact Whites.

Now the Vision was upgraded this past spring, but I really haven't put much time since. My time comes after the rains condition the ground, and the temps are more to my likings.

If you don't find what's going on with it, might want to contact Whites.

Recovery delay will not cause the problem. The delay is the time allotted from when the coil acquires the target and when it can start acquiring a new target. Until the time period is finished it will not acquire a new target. Switching the coil mount will make no difference. Have you dug to find the target you think you have? You have to prove there is a target to pin point.

Before we can help

You must dig the target you can't pin point.
You must tell us where your All metal is set
You must tell us if VCO is on
Tell us if you have checked will your dealer

Again you seem to be the only one with this problem. People have had some pin pointing problems but not with your symptoms. I n the other cases it was operator error. So far I have asked and no one else has responded saying they have your problem. I'd have my local dealer solve your problem, in person.
