target depth

Ive heard about raising the coil off the ground until you get no signal then guess at the depth from that

When you have an idea of how deep you can get in your ground conditions with your detector, raising the coil gives an idea of depth. You can also size the target with the pinpoint for more information to help you judge. Big targets can make you raise the coil a lot even if deep while tiny foil pieces maybe on the surface and the detector will loose it with the coil up an inch or two, so it is all relative. With practice, coin size targets can be guessed on depth pretty accurately. Listen to intensity, edges of beep, size, and how far you can lift coil. There are a lot of little clues that you can apply to figure out how a target presents itself and how deep it may be.
