Taping wire ?

Mr Bean

New member
Okay every so often I run across posts with people getting false readings and funny tones. I have seen recommending taping the wire from the coil going up like 6 inches at bottom . Does it work and why doesnt Garrett tell you to do it. I look at it this way if it affects anything or makes it work better then why dont the engineers /manufacturers tell you to do it

Hi Mr. Bean, I have been putting two straps at the bottom of my coil wire up about 12" and rap from there on up. I don,t know if this has helped or just moving to another spot, but i don,t false as much and my wire looks better. Before it looked like it might of been bent to much. I know that if your wire is loose and over your coil to much it will cause trouble with falseing. I don,t think i would tape it, it might make a place on your detector. Velceo straps will hold it find. Good luck Flintstone

If your coil wires are loose close to the coil, and they move from the movement of the coil or wind, the coil will pick them up as a target. Garrett in ALL of their manuals tell you to wrap the coil wires around the lower and upper rod. This is to prevent the wiggling of a loose coil wire. Some people have taken this a step further and wrapped some tape on the coil wire to stabilize it even more. This is not usually an issue, unless you are hunting with the sensitivity running too high and the coil banging on trees and rocks.

If you look at how my wire wraps around upper and lower pole and goes down to coil with wide gap .It doesnt move and is stable. I understand Garrett manual wrapping cable around pole but no suggestion on securing it. I dont have any issues so I decided not to touch it
