TALL GRASS HUNTING IDEAS

DWild

Member
Got a chance to get back in a large area that was very active from about 1870 to 1910. Found 1 seated quarter, 2 seated dimes, 3 barber dimes and more in this spot years ago when the grass was short. Ground lays pretty much like it was in the old days but the grass is around 8 to 10 inches tall and dense. Cutting is not an option. Going to have to hunt it like it is or not at all. Other than just forcing the coil down as far as possible anyone got any ideas on machine setup to help. There is not a lot of trash other than from that era. It has been hunted fairly hard a few times but the things I found were not extremely deep. Now that I have better experience I want to give it another shot. The on edge and deep targets could really pay off. There are nails to deal with and I am afraid hunting in TTF is going to miss what I am after. I may just hunt open screen and see what happens. I am open to any suggestions.

try multi cond. variability 27-28 high trash / smooth audio tones limit 30 deep on!! all-metal also or disc.30 -35 ferrous area

vol. gain 24-26

cant remember all but give it a go!

I thought about turning deep on since I will be running higher off the ground and the targets might be weak. What does smooth audio do for you? I have had deep silver read in the 30's so I would probably not discriminate that area out. I thought about cranking up the manual sensitivity. I usually hunt in auto +3. In my area auto +3 runs in the mid 20's. I have switched to manual over some iffy targets and never noticed a difference other than background noise.

Can you spray the area with grass killer and not get into trouble? If not, then if you live in area where you get lots of heavy snow, then you can go in the spring when the snow has weighted down the grass.

MULTI WITH SMOOTH

makes the coin stand out give it a test run before you go. and yes manual , as high as you can run stable but get as close to the ground as you can !!

if not to noisy all-metal also this will give you the most from your e-trac

thats what i was thinking too. other than that, cranking it up to manual 30 (or as high as you can) and just fight through it.

Try laying down a large sheet of plexiglass or even some thin plywood, something you can walk on and detect through.
Can't say I've tried it myself but who knows!

Thanks for the help. We will see how bad it is in the morning. I will probably be trying a little bit of everything mentioned. I will let you all know how it went.

It was almost impossible. I did find one 1882 Indian head. I had the Etrac sensitivity cranked up pretty good and it caught this on edge coin 6 inches down with the coil 4 or more inches off the ground. I switched back to Auto +3 after laying the grass down to listen to the target. You can hear the signal and see the cursor movement on a video link I have on my other post "Pulling Out The Deep Stuff".
