Talking with Minelab Customer Service Technician today about precautions when water hunting with your CTX...

Spoke with Darin at Minelab and he told me some of the things they advise CTX users to do so I decided to make a post about them. Most of us don't take the battery out unless it's showing low on charge. That's probably a bad idea to mix with water hunting. If you happen to get a tiny piece of foreign material on the gasket and then submerge the unit after a few hours you might get a very small amount of moisture in the battery pack area. What you should always do when you get out of the water is to remove the battery and let even unseen amounts of water evaporate. As Darin pointed out if there is a drop of water in there and you have a fully charged battery it will continue to short the terminals which is going to cause electrolysis further damaging the contacts and the battery. If you remove the battery immediately and there was a droplet in there almost no damage would occur. A can of air to spray or even blowing in there will be better then nothing.

To the other side of things.(Prevention of the leak.) Always remove the gasket and clean the area under where it sits with some kind of smooth, small blunt object so you can remove any debris. Wipe the gasket down and reinstall it making sure you don't try to make it fit backwards. (You really have to try to mess this up as the gasket only truly fits one way.) If you're mechanically challenged then get someone else to do this for you. No one will forgive you if you put the gasket in backwards.

Thanks again to Darin @ Minelab...
