I'm going to hit 2 adjecent areas, one being park trash and the other (bout 100 yards away) riddled with iron. What settings should I go with so I can get the most out of the 2 sites. Note, I have hunted the iron area with the E-Crack, CTX, G2 and Tejon and only the Tejon has produced. I have faith in the MXT so your help would be great. The first drink is on me.
i predict goodies! i have the older series E MXT and recently acquired a 5.3 coil. i like the ability to get "between" targets better. slower movement then pull the trigger pinpoint and then slightly move the coil for more adequate target evaluation. the 950 is great also, and my least fav believe it or not is the 6x10 the mxt was designed for. in my heavy trash the smaller concentric just seems to produce more for me- and maybe thats just me, but i use what works. i use the 6x10 in sparsely trashed fields. for parks- hand down the 5.3. and not so trashy after a cleaning of the area the 950 for that little bit of depth.
There is no other setting for the MXT but 0 discrimination and dig everything that doesn't read iron. This method has found me a lot of GOLD.
The 5.3 will pin point like a rifle scope.
Good Luck.

When you hit a target that is in the low foil range, and it bonces to iron, use your pin pointer to size the target and determine the center. Some larger size iron targets will read in the foil range if you hit them off center. But be careful that it isn't 2 targets close together.
I have found in trashy areas, that some times you will hit a spot that has what sounds like several targets in a small area. Makes things very confusing. I have picked one and dug it to find that there was only one left. The size and shape of a target while sitting close to another target and some soil conditions can cause weird things to happen.
I always figured as long as you're finding Wheaties you may/should be able to find IH's. The Wheaties were most likely there before it was metal detected and everything below the wheaties will still be there too. Albeit, wheaties do not give an indication about the possible presence of silver coins.
Although, we all know that not all coins show up accurately before digging. I have dug a lot of silver dimes that VDI'd lower than they should have. With early 80's technology(when almost every detectable area was covered at least a time or two), I am sure many silver coins were left behind along with these wheaties just because they cherry picked and did not dig the iffy signals quite as much as some do today. Most of my silver coins are found with coil styles that either were not common in the 80's or not yet invented. If the silver coin was missed due to a concentric coil masking back then, it will mask with a concentric coil today as well unless you dig the iron or foil next to the good target first or miraculously de-mineralize the ground. Some silver was also missed because the area was poorly covered previously. But if that were the common scenario, you could just use a 30+ year old 6000/D and still dig silver, I'm sure there are still virgin areas somewhere. I just like knowing I have some advantage after the area has already been detected many times over. The settings are mostly preference as long as it is stable, ground balanced and you do not disc out too much(more disc causes loss of depth and trash next to good targets causes masking if disc is set higher than said trash). With the 5.3 coil, you will need to overlap about 50% of the coil so each sweep is only about 2.5 to 3 inches forward OR less. In trashy areas, 1 inch forward per sweep is even better. I find this to be about the same regardless of coil size and a lot of people move forward way too much per sweep.
The 5.3 coil is a great choice for what you are wanting to do. On my MXT Pro I use the 5.3 and set the Disc. to just knock out nails. Don't use very much Disc. just enough to knock out nails. I also use just single tone. Can get kinda busy/noisy in trashy areas with all the tones. I hunt mainly ghost towns and old homestead sites and coins /tokens are rarely ever deep. Usually less then 4" or 5". If you are hunting a spot that is real trashy and targets are somewhat shallow you can kick the threshold down and give it more of a silent search like the M6 if it becomes real noisy. Just go slow and smaller swings and the 5.3 will find the stuff. Also dont totally rely on the VDI numbers, good targets next to trash can skew your numbers and if your number is skewed ie: a lower VDI will give a different tone. I eliminate multi tones and only give VDI numbers a glance to help determine if I wanna dig.
I also used my M6 on my last few hunts and have been using the 5" excelerator coil and have been pretty happy with it in trashy areas. And last but not least for the real trashy iron infested sites I use my good ol Classic ID with the 350 snooper coil......2 filter, fast recovery, very slow sweep.......is deadly in Ghost towns etc. Anyhow just my two cents worth.
Maybe Monte will see this post and throw in his two cents worth but I bet he will agree on your coil choice, the eclipse 5.3 and I would be interested in what he has to say.
Well, since wer'e talking about the mxt Pro which I dearly love ( in fact I have 2 of them) I've been reading of all the positive things people we're say about the 3.5 coil. Well I gave in and all I have to say is good things about. It's an awesome coil, separates trash, and I even went over about a 40x60 ft area I had gone over with my 6x10DD and found about 15 more coins I had missed. Maybe because I went over it slower with the 3.5. Anyway I'm happy with it. It and my 6x10DD and my D2-10" Life is good. You sure have a great bunch of guy's and ladies on here, proud to say I'm here too. HH. one thing I noticed on the 3.5 is it hit's a dime on 77. on my 6x10 it hits on 78 or higher. I can live with that though. lol.
