Taking my Sov XS-2a out for it's maiden voyage this eveing :detecting:

Been reading, reading, and reading some more, hopefully some of this stuff has sunk in and will come into play as I take my newly acquired Sovereign XS-2a out for it's maiden voyage this evening.

It came with the stock 10" BBS 1000 coil, Sunray S-12 Intruder, and the giant 15" WOT, but I'll start off with the BBS 1000 (I have an 8" Coinsearch coming as I read a lot of great posts about that coil, and for $50 I couldn't resist ).

The Sunray DTI II meter needs to go in for a repair, so no training wheels for me, I guess I'll just dig everything that sounds "positive".

Pinpointing looks like it may be a little tricky at first.

Oh and how do you guys get a feel for the depth ? I'm running a Fisher Coinstrike and F4 and they both have depth meters to help clue you in on the depth, not sure how you determine that on the Sovereign ?

Good luck...

you get used to the sound of objects at different depths. Also there is a difference in the width of the targets with different depths.
You can always lift the coil until you lose the target. The deeper it is, the less you can lift the coil.

Took the Sov out for a few hours after work this evening and I have to say that I really like it thus far. I didn't disc or notch out anything, initially ran in auto sens, with a slight threshold hum. The machine was so stable, that I moved the sens out of auto and it ran just as stable at max sens. I hit the sides of sidewalks in an older part of town I've never hit hoping to get a lucky hit on an older coin, but that wasn't to be. This area wasn't too trashy, I did get some nulls, and had one interesting one where it would get a quickish coin sound, then null. I dug up a nail, then hit it again and a nickel was just a couple of inches away.

For the areas that null, will it always be quite until you dig the iron, or if a coin or other non-ferrous object is above/under the iron, will it eventually sound off or ?

This thing loves nickels, and makes a pretty apparent sound on them. I think with a bit more practice I'll be able to differentiate the junk sounds, I had a couple of pieces of can-slaw that I was able to call before I dug them, but some other things got me (like a 40oz colt 45 screw top, a brass shell casing, etc.). Then theres those mosquito like sounds.

Coins for the most part weren't too bad to pinpoint (although I see a Sunray S-1 in my future for sure), but non-coin items were a challenge (even if switching to AM and trying to outline them).

Here's my first trips haul, the big brass or copper tag on the bottom says "Do not Disconnect Lead", I have no idea what it's from, nor do I the copper/brass thing next to it. I think with a bit of practice I'll be able to tell the zincolns (first column to the left ), they kind of linger and have a less then nice coin sound compared to dimes, copper pennies and quarters.
