Take the MXT challenge

Set the machine in relic mode. With the trigger forward. Turn your discrimination all the way to zero. And here's the fun part . Cover your screen so you cannot see your VDI numbers. And dig all the high tones.and just use your hearing to determine what to DIG UP.You might be pleasantly surprised if you're in a good spot.
Just do it for the fun of it.

That is so true. When I first started to detect years ago, I relied on the screen. I switched to Tesoro with no screen and only one tone and it was amazing what I found. I dug a lot of junk at first until I understood the language. I often do the same with the MXT, it's a great way to hunt.

Remember, The MXT Pro does not switch to alternate mode by moving the trigger forward. What you are doing is putting the MXT in all iron mode with a slow S.A.T speed. To do this with the MXT Pro while in Relic mode, toggle through the tones until you get to 2-tone. For C/J mode, the S.A.T. is FAST regardless of tone selection or trigger position. In Relic Mode there are two preset S.A.T. speeds. Following this procedure switches to a slow S.A.T. speed. The slow S.A.T. speed is the reason this particular mode is much smoother and quieter than C/J mode or Relic mode outside the alternate mode (Alt mode being trigger fwd for mxt or 2-tone for the pro).

Thanks for the tip. It's been a while since I posted on this site. I have one of the older versions of the MXT when they first came out, will try your advice as soon as the Northeast is thawed out a bit! :) Will this work with both the stock coil/eclipse 5.3 ?? I'm from the old school, started detecting 40+ years ago with a White's Coinmaster IV, so hunting in the all-metal mode is nothing new to me. :)

When hunting I use relic mode 100% and many times when hearing a silver target, I can tell Larry, "I think this is a good one", and it usually is. 9 out of 10 times. It pays to know your machine and to have a "good" ear. I've done it a few times with gold rings also. HH, Nancy

I tried your challenge. Kinda of different. you can really hear the good stuff among the iron targets, not as much grunting.

While I find the TID a useful feature, having started in detecting with beep and dig machines, I usually put the sound ahead of the display when deciding to dig. I'm a believer that all detectorists would benefit from using a beep and dig machine until it's well learned or, as mentioned above, spend a good bit of time with the display covered to become proficient with the tone(s) of the machine they use.
