I've seen some good tips posted here. The type of thing not in the manual... Secrets or quirks discovered in the field. I'd be interested to see what you all have found out. Here are a few things that come to mind:
1. The detector is sometimes too sensitive. Internal circuit noise sometimes gets out of hand. I have found that by shutting it off and then on again fixes this. I think this is because the internal noise gets in a recurrent loop. Give it a try. (This only happened 3 times at mid day).
2. This machine particulary runs better in morning. Once again, this is probably due to it being a hot machine. This is true of most detectors (due to the suns energy?)I hear and can definitely verify it with this machine. The hits I get at 9am are waaaay better than those I get at 1pm (on a hot and sunny day anyway).
3. As another check on depth with faint signals. If the signal noticably becomes better when you turn the sensitivity up (say from 60 to 80) I'd say if it's saying deep, it probably is.
4. This is a good hint for those new with the machine. You often hear loooooots of targets and it can be overwhelming. I used to get tricked by those short and sharp signals, now I know they are usually small targets and not really 5" or 6" deep like the meter says. You will eventually get to the point that you hear through all those bad signals.
5. Learn to run the machine with the Discrimination at 10 to 25. The lower the better. You won't miss as many targets and can often hear those that are being partly masked and there for not hitting so hard. Otherwise, though the target would probably still be heard, it might be much softer causing you to not investigate it.
Well, that's what I can think of right now.
