I posted this originally over at the BH forum but wanted to share it with y'all too!

Ahhhh....bet the subject line threw y'all off. I just wanted to share with y'all what I did today since I felt it was a successful hunt. I finally made it over to a friends house to locate some pipes for him. The place dates back to the late 1800's and at one time had a store and a house on the lot. Maybe I shouldn't call it a lot since it spans well over 25 acres. Anyway, Bobby had asked me to come over to see if I locate some old pipes that got laid sometime in the late forties or early fifties for him. He didn't know how deep the pipes were or where we should start. I told him we would start at the old store to see if there is an existing water faucet and go from there. He told me there were no existing faucets at either the house nor the store since that was the first thing he looked for and why he was soliciting my help. Hmmmmmmmm

Well I figured the best start would be to detect the immediate perimeter of the house to see if I could locate a start point. The deal was that if I locate the pipes then I would have open access to all of the property and get to keep all finds. I have witnesses to this deal also. I took three units with me, my Sovereign Elite, the T2 and my TimeRanger. Because I am still playing with the T2 I decided to use it first and if I couldn't find it with that I would next use the SovE. I was working in the All Metal mode and to my astonishment the unit was much quieter than I have been previously experiencing. The grounds around there is pretty virgin in that nothing has been in the area since 1968 so I am told. I circled the house three times till I finally got a hit that I felt was worth while digging. I dug down to a depth of about 12in only to find a large piece of iron, looked to be a piece of a broken harrow. Well, I just kept going in circles stopping every now and then to dig what I felt was a good hit, most holes were at depths 12 and below. I was growing tired of this and was contemplating changing units when I finally got a good solid hit that passed real quick. I turned my angle and followed the signal (profiled) for quite a ways. I felt real god about this one and took my survival shovel and started to dig. I went down maybe 9inches below I hit metal. I reached down and cleaned out the dirt some and sure enough there was pipe. I sure was hoping it was just not a piece but one that we could track all the way over to the store.

I gave Bobby a call on the cell to let him know I had found a pipe and though I didn't know if this were it it was pointing in the right direction and from what I had dug and followed thus far it was at least six feet in length. Bobby showed up about 20 minutes later and brought with him a his two sons and a few shovels. They all got out of the pickup and came over to where I was, Bobby told his sons to go ahead and start digging to track the pipe. After maybe six more feet of pipe, I told them to hold on and lets just take another shot since most of the pipe was running about the same depth I should be able to follow it. I went back over and started following the pipe for a good 25-30 ft till I lost it again. Based on the direction it was pointed I kept forging ahead till I picked what I felt was it back up.. I traced it for about two or more feet then again lost it. I asked them to dig to verify it was indeed the pipe and it was. To my amazement the pipe was at about 15in though I was still able to pick it up. I told Bobby lets go over to where the store was and I'd work the perimeter of it to see if I could find the other end then we could just pull a line. Long story short, I found the line on the other end and we were able to pull a line and flag it. We dug intermittent holes to make sure we were on target and there were no other turns or elbows in the pipe.

By the time we got done with all the locating, flagging and stuff a few hours had passed and I was cold. The temps here changed drastically over night. Last week we were in the high seventies and believe we had one day where it was an even eighty. Well, last evening it rained a good soaking rain all night and by this morning the temp was down in the mid 40's with a slight breeze that made it feel worst. With the dampness in the ground it made for easy diggings but a damp cold that cut to the bone. I told Bobby I was going home and will let him know when I would come back to enjoy the hunt looking for stuff other than pipes. The place has lots of potential and I am looking forward to detecting it. Just needs to warm up some for my blood then I'll be out there again doing what I like to do best....coin shooting for old stuff. I guess the T2 proved it's worth and came through for me (this wasn't my first pipe hunt with the T2, I have done three of them lately and it has found them each time). I now have another site that I can detect that should and will yield some good old coins.
