T2 at Santa Monica Beach

Took 'er out to Santa Monica beach two days ago and as the surf pirates might say, "Thar... she blows". She did great in the dry sand but anything with a hint of moisture and she went crazy. No fastgrab possible and even manual GB was nearly impossible. I finally settled on a GB of 5 in the wet (this was more arbitrary than anything else, because I couldn't get an even tone when pumping the coil at all). After about 1/4 mile of pounding, I ended up with one dime!!! On the way back I tried hunting in the water with the coil submerged and had the overload siren blaring the whole time. I was quite disappointed, but I rarely hunt the beach so I guess I can live with being a landlocked MDer (at least until I can afford a beach machine).

Something that occurred to me after the fact, though... would playing with the frequencies made a difference? I'm kicking myself because I didn't think about it at the time.:rage:

Wolf

Fast Grab does not work when GB Phase readings are below #30.

The manual explains this, and recommends going to manual ground balance mode. It will be the only way to GB the unit in these conditions.

It may not be the smoothest unit on the wet salt sand, but one thing for sure is, it would have never worked properly without a proper ground balance.

When you go back there again, try manual GB. Turn up the threshold as to hear it, go into all metal mode, and perform manual GB. After this you can switch back to discriminate mode, the GB setting you just performed will stay. Try not to dial in too much discrimination, just enough to rid the signal from the salt, and iron.

Thanks Mr. Bill. You might've missed the part of my post where I mentioned spending a LOT of time with the manual GB. I know the T2 manual says that fastgrab won't work below 40 so I only attempted fastgrab initially before getting the "can't gb" readout. My problem was that even the manual "all-metal" GB wasn't stable to any degree.

Would a frequency change benefit this situation at all?

I just don't think the T2 is intended to be a beach machine.
The manual says to reduce sensitivity to 30 at the beach.
That won't give you much depth but did you try that?

Hello Wolf,

Santa Monica (Ca) is my favorite beach, One of the best beaches for metal detecting. Haven't been there in months and sure do miss the good hunting.

Not too many VLF detectors can handle California ocean wet sand and even most Pi's have problems. It gets worst further south near San Diego, So it's not a surprise the T-2 can't handle the wet sand area of Santa Monica. The T-2 is very sensitive and for other parts of Calif it does extremely well handing Calif soil but it does not fare as well in the ocean wet sand area.

Please don't be disappointed your T-2 could not handle the ocean wet sand, I can only name two VLF detectors that can handle the wet sand but for inland hunting the T-2 works circles around these two other detectors.

Which parts of L.A. are you from?
Old Cal.

Hello there Old Cal. Thanks for the info. I'm not too discouraged, really. The T2 has sure proven itself to me time and time again on dry land.

In answer to your question, I am in the San Fernando Valley (Northridge area).

Hi Eddie. Yep, I took the sensitivity down to 25 at one point. At that time it ran silent... too silent. I think you are correct about it not really being a beach machine (although that is one of the supposed functions listed in the manual). I guess if I hit the beach I'll have to stick to the dry stuff... it's just so much tougher to walk a mile or so on... I'll be huffing and puffing like the Big Bad Wolf that I am. :stretcher:

Yes I did miss that, sorry about that.

The T-2 is not the most forgiving unit in the salt environment. Perhaps a freq. change would have helped, but only if it was cause by EMF interference. If it were caused by ground interference it wouldn't.

Hi again, Mr. Bill. I didn't think changing the freq. would do much in this isntance, but I just didn't know. Thanks for the input.

Wolf

I was thinking of buying this unit because I need a inland and beach detector. So is everyone now saying it dosn't work well in wet salt sand?
