T-REX 9.5

Member
I like the idea of having a wider scoop for easier retrieval.
Do you think the 9.5 T-REX scoop would put up with as much as my golddigger 6" alum. water scoop with SS tip. I hunt lakes in the midwest, so sometimes the lake bottoms have rocks and clay, and can really require some twisting and pressure to cut through.
I have never bent or broke anything on my 6", but I don't want to buy the T-REX only to find out I purchased the wrong tool to do the job.

I have hunted the beaches on the Gulf Coast and have put a lot of pressure on the T-Rex, but I have not used it in
lakes or rivers where there is a lot of rock....with that said, I feel that if your alum. with SS don't bend I doubt
that the T-Rex will..It is a great scoop....remember, any scoop will bend if pushed to far.

I have been using a T-Rex for about four months. Personal opinion is that it is a well made piece of equipment. I have not had the opportunity to use it in a rocky area but when you take a full scoop of wet packed sand the wooden handle will take a bend. So far I have been careful to not break the handle. Most targets are within the first two scoops of sand. Sometimes I do have to dig a little deeper to get one of those real deep targets. The extra width makes it much easier to get the target in your scoop. I had a five inch steel RTG scoop and realized quickly that it was not sufficient for use in the water.

The T-Rex scoop is NOT a lightweight scoop. It not only has some heft to it there is also some weight. I carry my scoop at the beach on a "Tool Lasso" that I purchased at lowe's.

I am thinking of getting the 9.5 with 5/8 holes so some of the rocks will filter out of the scoop before I bring it to the surface. I don't want to have to rummage through half a basket of rocks to find my target. I guess I could always put a light screen at the back for smaller items .

Hoping the 5/8 hole scoop does not lack strength because of the larger spacing.
1/4 is too small, but I would maybe consider the 1/2 size holes.( I guess specs say 3/8"holes)
Any thoughts?

you should look at the 8" models also, especially the dry sand model.

ron has new scoop design with larger holes due out soon..

it is thick and made very well.

we can not post videos on here with ads, but it u go to youtube and search: gravediggermax - i did a reveiw on them some time pack - search for: T-REX S/S BEACH SCOOP REVIEW - 2 NEW 8" MODELS: DRY & WET

I have 2 of the newer 9.5 inch. I have a fiberglass handle in one, which I prefer over the wood -its lighter and it floats. I dig some big holes in fine sand and rocky NJ sand and put a lot of pressure on it and has been fine. To be safe I added a safety wire from the scoop to the handle above the break point (if it would) and will not lose the scoop should it break.

My old scoop had 1/2 inch holes and small items would fall out. The holes in this are great and while it may not drain as quick I am not dropping small items.

I have the exact scoop your looking at getting, I picked it up a year and a half ago. It is impressed me right when I took it out of the package, then I took it out often, it is very tough, almost impossible to break, I beat the crap out of it through river gravels, silt, muck, sand, all those wet and dry. Only issue is the weight, but I will put up with the heavy scoop for a lifetime of use and abuse. The weight is a pain when your digging and sifting with one hand in the water. I was skeptical with the cost until I got it, then I was relieved when I opened it up and the quality was outstanding! Well worth the price because it should last a lifetime, very versatile and strong.

Ron, I am an avid SALTWATER and Wet Sand HUNTER, and I have used MINE all over MANY of the FLORIDA Beaches, as well as MANY of the Beaches of S.JERSEY, DELAWARE, and OCEAN CITY, MD.!! I L-O-V-E MY 8" DRY T-REX Scoop, and I have really PUT IT through the P-A-C-E-S without ANY PROBLEMS!! Just USE DO CARE when you have a
D-E-E-P SCOOP F-U-L-L of WETSAND, ROCKS, SHIPWRECK DEBRIS, by CAREFULLY R-O-C-K-I-N the SCOOP BACK and FORTH, or SIDE to SIDE, thus BREAKING the S-U-C-T-I-O-N HOLD from the Bottom of the River/Bay or OCEAN, before YOU R-A-I-S-E the Scoop to SIFT IT!! Otherwise, YOU will Break your HANDLE, whether WOOD or FIBREGLASS A-L-O-T SOONER than YOU should!! Hope this HELPS, Les Robinson.

I have the 8 inch dry and after a year you need a glass to see any wear. I hunt 3 to 4 times a week and mostly sand, but some gravel and rocks. I split my handle the second week and wrapped it in Gorilla tape until I was brave enough to pull it out of the JB Weld marine epoxy bedding. A year has passed and it is still holding! I have learned to back off on my first pull and show a little respect. I am very happy with the T-Rex.

Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to get the 9.5 T-Rex with 5/8 holes when they are available. Ron says it will probably be May before they are ready.

I like mine a lot. A true beast. I will add an assist handle this year.

The only thing that I would like to modify is that ridge on the top because it really holds a lot of sand and its hard to clear in very shallow water.

Has anyone ever added and drain holes behind the lip to help clear the sand?[/size]
