Sydney hunts with a tip for those with the Pro Pointer.

Got back from 10 days down in Sydney. That is one sweet place to be swinging a detector with rich pickings all over the place. I took the Ace and X-terra70 with me, with both detectors getting a good work out. I even got to hunt with werewolf who posts on a few other Findmall forums.
I found that when swing the X-Terra I was constantly preferring the 6in concentric coil. It's just a sweet coil to use, even on large open areas as it throws out a great field. yet pinpoints sooo sweetly.
After being there a couple of days, by prearrangement, werewolf and I got together at a honey hole of a spot that I found a couple of years ago. we pulled out $40 a piece and thoroughly enjoyed hunting together.
The next day, while taking the kids to surfing lessons, I heard a news story on the radio that grabbed my attention, but took a week before I could hunt the spot that I heard about. I started out with the Ace. I bought one again recently having sold one 9 months back due to the harsh audio. This time I'd set it up with only 3 notches open. much easier on the ear. After finding $23 with it and reaching the goal of it paying for itself, I pulled out the 70 armed with the 6in coil and what a sweet hunt it was. I had to call it quits after four hours of hunting, but the 70 had snagged a further $60. I didn't want to stop!!! That meant $83 for 4 hours. If only I could get down to Sydney more often. There were a number of juicy spots that I came across though various media and only which I could hunt them all. I did hunt a few play grounds but found them to be a waist of time.
In the end, after ten days of mostly early morning hunts 6 to 9:30am hunts I'd netted $333 plus 5 foreign coins. Apart from dragging my bones out of bed at such a ridiculous hour it was a sweet time and place to hunt in. I'm envious of all you city hunters that have such juicy spots on your door step.
Following a tip from uncle Willy and others over on the Garrett forum, When using my pro pointer on a target that was too deep for it to hear, what I did, was slide either my screw driver or digger up the body of the pro pointer till I was just about to tickle the audio, Doing this allows you to hear deeper targets with it. Uncle Willy said that he talked to one of the Garrett engineers about it and the engineer said something about there threshold being reduced and causing audio break through to occur sooner than a target normally would. That's as best I remember how it was explained. I can't see why it wouldn't work with most pinpointers.
As you can see in the first picture, I mostly focused on the goldies this time around ($1 and $2 coin). It made the finds a little less interesting but productive. In the second picture from left to right: an English 20 pence, one English 2 pence, a Singapore dollar, an unknown coin from Thailand, a New Zealand 20 cent piece and a Funland token.

Gday Mick,

Big smoke eh.
Great hunting you sly old bushie.
$333 ..devils no. isnt it ? or is that 666 ??? lol.
I have both of those tectors too mate and reckon they are the bees knees...I just turn down the Ace as it's way too loud.
Werewolf with his Tesaro is a top bloke...never met him face to face but have communicated many times.
Sounds like you had a great time and cleaned up the parks fairly well for them down there too.
Good on you Mick .
Thanks for the tip with the Propointer mate, I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes.
Happy New Year to you and everyone who reads this.

I was tempted to try for $350. I had a couple of hours still left to detect, but liked the way the numbers fell. $333for the hunt. $211 with the Ace and a $112 with the 70. And it rounded out the year with $1111. It just appealed to my sense of symmetry.:nerd:
I reduced the volume on the Ace by putting electrical tape over the speaker. I don't like wearing headphones. Even when there was too much noise to hear the Ace, you can feel it sounding off through the hand grip. I see you used the notching to good effect on your X-Terra, in the same way I did on the Ace. I find the X-Terra's easier on the ear than the Ace, so i haven't gone done that path with it yet. I usually hunt in 4 tones. Having the notching is really great. Sometimes I'll knock out 14 on the 70, so that pull tabs don't give consistent signals.

I've heard that before about the Garrett PP. However, in my testing it didn't seem to make any difference. I'm not saying it doesn't work. Just that I saw no gain, (Airtest).

Gday Mick,

Discriminating out un-targeted no's is the only way to go at some parks where time is limited and a big area is to be sweeped for dropped loot.
As much as I like going slow and being thorough - which is what I usually do (as it comes naturally to me - I am often left far behind at club hunts)...
I also have been having a go at a faster sweep to cover area and recycle peoples unwanted coins. lol.

In the hot weather I have been using earbuds, little earphones with a wrap around piece that holds onto the back of each ear.
They are a pleasure to use and with volume control are ok on the Ace, but the main reason to use them is that I can wear a big hat to shade my melon.
Lately, the Ace is building up cobwebs as I am having such a great time with the Xterra, but I know the yella terra will come out again at some stage.

Catch you later Mick.

I saw that post before and I got it to work, I noticed I can get an extra 1 to 1.5 inches on a coin using this method

Great work Mick. boy! $333 in one trip is fantastic. Sure beats my $16.95 staying about five days over near the mid-north coast. However, I was concentrating on learning to use my Excal, and for the first time for a long time, did not get my X Terra out of the car. Had a lot of fun in the water/wet sand though, finding a few coins, a few silver pieces and a fair bit of junk jewellery. Good fun though. Congratulations on your haul.

hi mick, 'thanks for the info.i tried it on my propointer and it works.i also tried it on my whites bullseye.slid a metal washer all the way up the shaft and doesn't that improve the pinpointing capabilities.wow!on this forum if you read everything that comes up you will find a great swag of information that helps the learning detectorist to find more.thanks again, blowfly.

G'day Furious.
That's a great part of the world. A perfect climate. When the missus and I walked along the beach down at Cronulla (not the mid north coast though) we thought, wouldn't it be great if we could walk along the beach regularly.
Good luck with the Excal. I took the Explorer for a walk yesterday and found out how rusty I'd become with it. Pulled up a couple of screw caps but no coins. You really need to swing it regularly to keep your ear in.

Thanks for the heads up on the Whites pinpointer. It can't hurt to try it on a variety of pinpointers to see what gives. I'll often try things out on different detectors, if I find it works with one. Sometimes it does and sometimes not. Fun to try all the same.

The notching ability of the X-Terra's and the Ace are valuable features you won't find on other detectors. At times it's a real sweet feature that makes life easy.
Be careful not to sweep too quickly. I've found that anything faster than 1.5 seconds per 4 foot sweep and you'll only detect targets under the receive coil.
Mick Evans.

I decided to pay attention to what depth difference it made when I took it out yesterday, plus played around with it with some air tests on the targets I recovered. Like Blowfly, it seemed to give about an extra inch to inch and a half. It's good to play around and find what works and doesn't work for you. Sorry it hasn't worked out for you.
