Got back from 10 days down in Sydney. That is one sweet place to be swinging a detector with rich pickings all over the place. I took the Ace and X-terra70 with me, with both detectors getting a good work out. I even got to hunt with werewolf who posts on a few other Findmall forums.
I found that when swing the X-Terra I was constantly preferring the 6in concentric coil. It's just a sweet coil to use, even on large open areas as it throws out a great field. yet pinpoints sooo sweetly.
After being there a couple of days, by prearrangement, werewolf and I got together at a honey hole of a spot that I found a couple of years ago. we pulled out $40 a piece and thoroughly enjoyed hunting together.
The next day, while taking the kids to surfing lessons, I heard a news story on the radio that grabbed my attention, but took a week before I could hunt the spot that I heard about. I started out with the Ace. I bought one again recently having sold one 9 months back due to the harsh audio. This time I'd set it up with only 3 notches open. much easier on the ear. After finding $23 with it and reaching the goal of it paying for itself, I pulled out the 70 armed with the 6in coil and what a sweet hunt it was. I had to call it quits after four hours of hunting, but the 70 had snagged a further $60. I didn't want to stop!!! That meant $83 for 4 hours. If only I could get down to Sydney more often. There were a number of juicy spots that I came across though various media and only which I could hunt them all. I did hunt a few play grounds but found them to be a waist of time.
In the end, after ten days of mostly early morning hunts 6 to 9:30am hunts I'd netted $333 plus 5 foreign coins. Apart from dragging my bones out of bed at such a ridiculous hour it was a sweet time and place to hunt in. I'm envious of all you city hunters that have such juicy spots on your door step.
Following a tip from uncle Willy and others over on the Garrett forum, When using my pro pointer on a target that was too deep for it to hear, what I did, was slide either my screw driver or digger up the body of the pro pointer till I was just about to tickle the audio, Doing this allows you to hear deeper targets with it. Uncle Willy said that he talked to one of the Garrett engineers about it and the engineer said something about there threshold being reduced and causing audio break through to occur sooner than a target normally would. That's as best I remember how it was explained. I can't see why it wouldn't work with most pinpointers.
As you can see in the first picture, I mostly focused on the goldies this time around ($1 and $2 coin). It made the finds a little less interesting but productive. In the second picture from left to right: an English 20 pence, one English 2 pence, a Singapore dollar, an unknown coin from Thailand, a New Zealand 20 cent piece and a Funland token.
