Swingy thingy

Well-known member
Does the swingy thingy really help with weight? Is it comfortable or a waste of money. Any help and opinions appreciated!

Treasurechic, I don't own one and I am sure folks will reply, unless they are all on the NOX forum.

I made my own out of moving straps and carriage hooks.
It did help me use the Exp II for a longer amount of time before getting tired.

Before I made that contraption my arm would hurt often.

The weight is my dilemma. I love the machine but it just gets too heavy

Obviously it does not change the weight.. It disperses the weight away from total dependency of arm and shoulder.

I have one that I bought for the SE Pro and I used it for a while. Then I developed some muscles using the SE Pro stand alone and went that way for a while. Now, with my woods detecting, I find that lifting the coil over fallen trees, swinging around brush, etc... has gotten me a kind of tennis elbow I'll never forget. So next time out in the woods I think I'm taking it in the full up position to force me to slightly push down on the machine with the coil fully extended and maybe that'll help with the elbow. Which sometimes keeps me awake at night. If you're just going to do flat grass it may help a little, but it depends on the extension of the coil and how comfortable you are with it to begin with. I'm a real short person at 5' 5". I thought at first it would be a good water hunt device but learned that in the rocky streams around here, you have to go down and find it, which didn't help to keep the machine box out of the water. As a grass hunter, here, sometimes, it is an aide if you have shoulder or elbow problems. But just like wireless headphones make you free of a cord, this retaining strap limits you're maneuverability on digging targets as you're always fussing with getting the detector temporarily out of the way. Just MHO from experience but I hope it helps your decision. I think I bought it back then for around $20. Which at the time was reasonable. I haven't looked into it lately.

Yes, it helps with weight. I had a shoulder injury several years ago and picked up a swingy-thingy so I could continue using my Explorer with the old white X-1 pinpointer. It allowed me to swing my rig despite my shoulder trouble. However, I am kind of a keep it as simple as possible guy and having to get strapped into the rig and keep it out of the way when retrieving targets was a nuisance for me, So I went another route that completely cleaned up my Explorer. I bought a hand held pinpointer to get the X-1 weight off the upper rod and followed that with an RNB battery that removed several more ounces of weight.

I do miss having the Target ID ability of the X-1, but like having the simplicity of detector free of the excess weight, wires and cords.

However, if it came down to not being able to hunt at all, I would definitely go with the swingy-thingy.

Rich...I may have missed it but how much weight does the RNB battery take off? I think I need a new battery as my original that came in my SE doesn't hold a charge over four hours.

Ive talked about this before when I tore my Rotator Cuff. Im a die hard and as soon as I could I got back out detecting I did but the pain ... I don't need to elaborate. The areas I hunt are away from the truck and some hiking is required I began using a small camel back pack that has both a waist strap and chest strap to hold my gear and I have an adjustable Bungie cord that I hook to the right side chest connection of the pack. The pack is supper comfortable and the the bungie swings well from there both left and right. I realize not everyone wants a pack but Im telling you, its nice fit and feel and can carry water. It does not have to be a camelback. They have made such good quality packs and fits and I need it to hold lunch, a drink and few possibles. it worked really good for me even with the 17 inch loop on the ctx.

Amazingly, the other day i realized I had been going out without any bungie cord and my shoulder is doing really great to be able to do that. everyone said it would never be the same. But Id say as good as ever before as I am using the 17 ich coil a lot. I still have difficulty with my arm straigt up over my head...but that only due to the fact that I DONT SWING thE DETECTOR UP OVER MY HEAD. lol.

I don't use one due to the added tangle of cords. What I found best for me was to use the stock coil until I felt fatigue and then swap out to a Coiltek Joey elliptical which feels like a feather after the stock coil.
