Swinging low-n-slow

Southwind

Well-known member
The V3i likes low-N-slow as well as a normal swing. I went out for a quick hunt last night and did some testing with swing speed and response. Some other detectors require the low-n-slow approach and others don't like it at all. There are times when low-n-slow is the best technique. The V3i seems to be very forgiving in swing speed doing well with a brisk swing or slow. I made no changes in my normal hunting mode only slowed down my swing to a controlled push. I was able to pull some keepers in close proximity of trash with laser precision with a slow sweep speed. The V3i also seems to make finding nickle a breeze just like the DFX. When I get a target with a tight VDI of 18-21, never 22 or higher, it will be a nickle 90% of the time. I've had a few bent tabs not read above 21, but generally they will give you the occasional 22 or higher which eliminates it being a nickle in my soil.

My keepers from last nights testing included 4 wheats, 1 silver rosie, a 1935 buffalo and a Disney pressed penny something to do with pirate gold. I also found some clad which I was sure would be clad but I recovered just so I could confirm msuspicion'sns. One of the other nickles was the dreaded 1940. Two years older and it would be a buffalo, two years newer and it would be a war nickle.

Thanks for the info. I've just started playing with a recovery delay of 80 in iron infested spots. I still found keepers but preferred the recovery delay of 42 (with my 6X10). I get great separation and great depth with a shorter recovery delay (42) so in iron I just prefer to use it (over say 80) as I can cover more area but I'm just starting the testing so am curious what others have found.

Did you find that you lost coin target signals by changing the recovery delay lower or higher on any of the signals you attained in trash/iron? (Not sure what you meant by "mode" - settings, swing speed or...)

I prefer the lower recovery speed myself. I think I have mine at 40. I like the snappy response. I ran in my normal mode which is stock coin with the discrimination settings accepting from +93 down to -20. Sensitivity up at 10, discrimination sens at 90 and AM at 90.

Ahh, I follow you now. I have found basically the same. You can slow down your sweep speed with a shorter recovery delay and it actually might improve your separation and signal.

But if you try to speed up your swing speed with a larger (higher) recovery delay you will not even get a beep from the target. Make that mistake and you will pay.

You have to match your RD to your style. A shorter RD can indirectly cause you to lose deeper signals just because the signals are shorter. If the shorter beep doesn't bother you go with it. You have to also fit it to the amount of trash. ROB

Rob - I was playing with the recovery delay at 80 in iron to see if I can somehow pull more coins with the larger delay (and also was testing correlate there). I noticed in my test garden that I got a better hit in very heavy iron on both a nickel and hammered coin with the recovery delay higher (longer). This really shocked me on the latter so I thought to investigate it further. I don't have a problem adjusting my sweep speed to be slower and consistent, I just got impatient with so much area to cover and don't mind shorter beeps as I came from that in the Teknetics line. I have to say I do prefer the longer beeps now.

But what you said regarding losing deeper targets is what concerns me. I mean I get great depth with the shorter recovery delay but I think I might get 10%-20% more with a longer delay. I figure if I have more area to cover, like when scouting a new area, I'll go with the shorter delay and then when I find a productive area or when the targets get deeper, I'll go with the longer recovery delay. Then I might be playing the numbers right.
