swing speed

n/t

Tony, slow...............................:poke:

Actually so slow ..................................................................................... that other people metal detecting........................................................................... wonder what your doing....... Tony...

Not into seconds between swings and all that BS but think of painting the ground in a slow brush technique...Might want to do some experimenting with actual buried coins to see where you get the best depth and use that speed on actual hunts....

halo that only coins which have been in the ground for many years give off.

A test garden is the worst place possible to experiment with swing speed IMHO.

The same thing you are experiencing holds true for me when I piddle with different coils, etc. in my test garden.

The deeper coins you want to find on an actual hunt over unplanted targets will not be as responsive to the slower swingspeed in a test garden simply because they do not have the halo given off by ancient coins which have been in the ground for 75 to 100 years.

Trust me...if you're looking for the deeper and older coins missed by other hunters...creep the coil along and just "scan" the ground.

Don't worry about counting seconds between swings, etc....just simply "scan" the ground and creep it along.

Don't swing the coil.....creeeeeeep it...for the older and deeper coins.

If a person is only worried about finding coins in the 6" to 8" depth range...then a faster sweep will work fine.

Bryce has some good thought as testing should be done in the field where it counts, but just lay some coins on the ground and you will get a good idea what swing speed will get you the most depth and adjust your swing accordingly...
Think about if old coins develop halo's so does the junk that surrounds them.
PS: one young fellow from the club swung Whites fast and got them as deep as anyone and more than most. Can't beat youth to handle a heavy detector in such a way and excellent hearing goes a long way also....so do some testing but have to agree with Bryce slow is the way to go with the Explorer series for outstanding depth.

John what many hunters do by mistake is they get to a place and out of excitement they start swinging way to fasf in hopes of a good find. Patience and going slow is the key. Imagine putting two pieces of masking tape on the floor say two feet apart if you start in the center going left then going past center to the far right I would take about a count of one thousand two thousand going to four. That is slow real slow but, gives you an idea of speed of swing.

I might also add if you type in "swing speed" choosing only the Explorer forum rooms you will see many posts going back a decade +.

I am learning to slow down now myself. While reading Andy's book and these forums I am finally getting a clear picture just how slow I really need to be swinging, slower than I thought was slow :detecting: This SE Pro is an AMAZING machine! I started detecting when I was 12, back in the early eighties, and so I was so used to a certain style and speed of swinging, I am doing my best to change that, and am learning that the old way is not always the best way. Thanks for the great info!

Those are just a few of the very successful hunters I have gotten tips and advice from.

I know Bryce doesn't even consider it "swinging the coil" in bad ground or trashy ground. It's more like painting a picture or scanning the ground as he calls it.:beers:

Most of the time I wouldn't even think of it as "swing speed" ...but more as "how slow can I actually go"?...THEN slow down some more.

Agree with you on both counts, Dan. I get the best depth when I whip my whites. On my explorer though like Bryce says the slower the better and deeper. Nice post.
