Swing Speed

How does my detecting buddy get away with swinging his Teknetics T-2 at almost twice as fast as I can swing my Minelab 705? They are both VLF machines. I'm using my 5 x 10" 18.75 kHz coil. He is using the 11" Biaxial coil. Should I try another coil? I do seem to be able to go behind him and find items he missed, but at the end of the day he has the most finds.

I realize there may be too many variables to properly answer these questions.

Its a matter of wether your detector will detect well at that speed and personal habit. Some detectors detect better at faster swing speed ,and others at a slower speed.I personal like the slower turtle speed you miss less. And its also knowing your detector too.You swing at speed your comfortable with.IMHO

Strangely my Ace 250 goes deeper the faster it is swung and my Tesoros go deeper at a slower speed, even though the recovery is supposed to be slower on the Ace.

The disc setting can make a big difference in this equation. Setting the disc low on Tesoro detectors (or most other VLF detectors), allows one to swing at a slower speed and retain maximum depth. Setting the disc closer to max requires a brisk swing to obtain depths experienced at a low disc setting.
So if you are digging targets in the foil range and up, a brisk swing isn't necessary to obtain maximum depth. However if you are cherry picking in the copper/silver range, you may wish to swing the Tesoro a bit faster to find the deep targets. Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and see how it works. Of course a high trash area can create a masking effect on deeper targets if the coil is swung too fast. A slower swing may be required to see the targets that would otherwise be easily detected in a trash free location.

interesting concept Ism , will give it a try on my Tesoro's
