I was wondering about swing speed.
I usually go fairly slow
I cant see were it would make much difference.
If a coin is under the coil it should respond

Set some coins up for tests. You will be surprised how much swing speed does in fact make a difference machine to machine, models to models.

and ground to ground Elton. The optimum swing speed almost has to be tailor adjusted each place you hunt and the amount of trash in your ground. Most detectors will go deeper with a faster swing but where there is trash and iron, one has to slow way down to be able to hear the good targets between the bad targets.

Varying ground conditions, Junk, depth, machine settings, sweep speed is pretty important indeed.

Larry IL is the master on sweep speed techniques, and he might jump in with some more advise if we are Lucky.

If you look back on the V3i and Whites Forums if I remember right he has some information posted about sweep speeds..

High,
Swing speed depends upon your detector and coil size used.
Two filter units like the Whites Classic series can handle a faster swing than an XLT or any Sovereign/GT.
Trade off is that the 2 filter units don

Generally a slow to moderately slow swing may often help to pick out goodies being masked by trash near by as the detector needs time to retune from discriminating the trash, but over the years some detectors actually require a slower or faster swing due to their design. If in doubt, check the owner's manual or experiment a bit with what you're using.

I have 6 metal detectors
right now using AT PRO

II have an AT Gold and when I lift the coil as high as I can go and still pick up the target, then test swing speed. There is no question about it, fast sweep picks up the target better. Slow sweep, no target. I guess it all depends on what you call fast or slow. Recommended speed is three feet per second. That is what I call fast. It is difficult to swing any faster.

Now shallow targets you want slower speed.
