Sweet Spot on a coil

Hey gang, any tips on how to find the sweet spot on a coil? Basically I'm trying to determine cold zero in shooting lingo. There's about 6 inches of snow on the ground where I live, so it's gonna have to be Something indoors. Is it as easy as listening with the headphones for the loudest signal? Do I go into pinpoint mode or stay in discriminate? Sorry for such a rookie question, but hey I got to learn!

I use pinpoint to size a target and for a depth reading, signal response is quick enough for me that I don't use "pinpoint" for "pinpointing". What coil are you using? With the 6x10, which was for me the most difficult because its closed, just work your coil from the front tip over the target, when the signal is clear, make note of the specific area on the coil, will be directly under, just practice

What detector and what coil do you use. If a round 9.5 coil with hole in the middle, put in pinpoint and that way you can stop the coil over the target and still get a sound. If DD do as Coinjumper said. The round coil is ease in pinpoint. You will learn, just takes time. You can hunt in the snow if you can stand the cold. Find a hill where kid play in the snow and get new finds. Good luck flintstone

Use pinpoint mode and place a coin on some paper or cardboard outside. Lift the coil up until you almost lose the signal and try the different methods to see what works best for you. The toe method works good for DD coils but the deeper the target, the more the target seems to move inward due to the curvature of the search field. I use the center of the coil to pinpoint, even on DD coils.......... works for me.

Sorry I didn't use my signature. I'm using a MX5 with a Detech Ultimate 13" DD coil. Thanks in advance for the help

I use that coil also, right after the signal fades, the target is in front of the notch on that coil, short sweeps moving backwards

Lifting the coil until the signal is weakest is the key to find the sweet spot with ANY detector- works with my MX 5.
