Sweet Excalibur Success

I posted this under the pics forum, but thought I'd share with my fellow Excalibur users.

After going temporarily insane and buying a White's BHID 300 detector for water detecting, I sold it and bought the detector I should have bought in the first place: a Minelab Excalibur. :minelab:

I have been unable to use it because of recent surgery, then on Thanksgiving i thought: who cares about those stitches! I'm going to the lake!

So two hours yesterday and two today I hunted two modern swim areas. The pic shows my finds, which were 32 pennies (many wheats), and assorted other coins, an old tax token, a key, some shotgun brass and a plated ring. (No gold, but the ring was encouraging!)

Here is the best part: NO JUNK!!! OK, I got fooled by ONE bottlecap. NO pulltabs, No screwcaps, no nails, no magical hotrocks. And this was my first time out! I went to the same lake where the Whites was ringing all over the place, saying here is a ring or coin, only to spend 10 minutes realizing it was hitting on a hot rock.

I don't work for Minelab or sell their equipment, but let me ask you, if you don't own a Minelab... WHY NOT?

the excal will make sort work of hot rocks you will never hear them , i hunted in takonite pelits today and still found som copper wire, you are in a good spot and i see Iam not the only one who finds shells shotgun

Unfortunately no tabs/caps/trash also means less gold- less platinum! Coins and silver are easy with Excal. Gold and Platinum can be another story! I know what junk sound likes and can correctly ID pull tabs by sound- well so I thought. Sometimes gold jewelry sounds just like a pull tab! Sometimes heavy gold rings sound like a coin! There is no way around this, even with an Excalibur. In the sea I used to pass up what I thought were gold range junk targets. Now I know better and dig all positive tones, no matter how big or small. It's fun to discriminate by ear and guess what the target is- but often I'm surprised to be thinking junk, only to scoop a huge gold medallion and chain! Or a $15,000 platinum/diamond ring that sounded like junk foil! I often wonder how much treasure I've passed over because I thought it was junk? The Excalibur works great around iron, but I say dig the other trash! Besides the Iron Mask and liking gold range targets, what really makes the Excalibur great is how efficient it is in the water. Pretty much set it and forget it... none of that GB stuff which can be murder in the surf!

I agree and dig everything that is a positive hit. I just got extremely lucky to not have to fight any trash for two consecutive days out. Probably because I already dug all of the lead weights with my Explorer II, and the fact that the other swim area is exclusively swimming, no fishing, etc. After about 6 feet from shore, no more garbage. It must all get swept up to the shallow end. I did hit on an old can, but felt the rough edges and left it. Too hard to dig through the rocks, especially with recent surgery.
