Sweep Speed

I noticed that the manual makes a rather strong point of using a fast sweep speed. Page 20 reads:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SWEEP SPEED
The T2 is noted for its quick response. This gives it unsurpassed ability to locate and identify good targets surrounded by trash. It also permits the user to sweep the searchcoil quickly in order to cover more ground with very little risk of losing targets. In general, if you are searching an area where the desirable targets are more than 8 to 10 inches deep, a faster sweep speed will detect to a greater depth and yield more accurate target IDs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yet several folks have reported, Rick(ND) most recently, that they needed to slow down. That got me thinking if I am missing something in what the manual is trying to convey???

As target signals get weaker as depth increases a point is reached where it becomes more difficult to differentiate a target signal from the ground signal. Since the ground signal typically doesn't change much, a faster sweep has no effect on it, but metal targets are affected in such a way that the signal will spike higher than the ground and thereby be easier to receive.

Not a new thing. One example would be Fisher's Coinstrike. It needs a faster sweep to get the depth it is famous for as compared to the sweep speed of a CZ. You can go slow with a CZ, but if you try that with a C$ you'll never get the depth or target id it is capable of.

I think the ground also plays a large part of what sweep speed works best for deeper targets. Key word is deep. Below 8-10" is deep.

I find that many of the area I detect you get a lot of signals that are high pitched in the db mode or the 3b for coin hunting. Now with the faster sweep speed you only hear these high tones all over, so by going slower you can separate them to see which are good and which are bad. Those you try to lock on and the number bounce around and the tones seem to change are false signals off of trash items. Those that lock on are good signals if the numbers seem to stay within a number or 2, if you were swing fast you never will get them to lock on. Now maybe if you are relic hunting you would be OK with using the 2 tones, but for the coin hunting you have to go slower to hear the coins in with trash I feel.

Faster sweeping speed in cleaner areas will work great where targets are far and few, but when they are many target you have to go slower to separate them.

I agree with you Rick. When you get into areas with lots of targets, you have to slow down to separate them.

One thing I wish it would be easy to do is reference sweep speed in a way that everyone knows what you are talking about. So far I haven't been able to do that. One mans fast is another mans slow :shrug:
