Here is a article I posted a while back on the Sovereign, so I will let you read this first.

The faster you go the more weaker signals get filtered out. In the water I move pretty fast without targets. I find moving the coil with out forcing it works well and reduces injuries. I have a really long shaft and like the full sweep.

You will get the feel for sweep speed with experience... general rule of thumb is the trashier and more iron infested the slower you will need to sweep... if at the beach or in a rather clean area just swing at a comfortable pace... when using these units in dics mode they will null on most iron which is good so you dont waste time digging so much junk but that same feature works slightly against you at the same time as it can cause masking of good targets next to iron... if im hunting at a beach or in a farm field for the 1st time i tend to swing at a comfortable pace until i start hitting targets then i slow down a bit... many times these units might not give a very good signal on your first sweep especially if the target is deep or partially masked... at this point i like to recheck the signal by varying my sweep speed and angle of sweep to try to make the signal sound as good as i can get it to sound at which time i decide whether or not to dig..... i would suggest watching some of utube videos of long time beach hunters and take note of thier sweep speed it will give you a good baseline of what average sweep speed is... good luck...

If you use the small 800 coil your sweep speed can be a little faster than with the larger 1000 coil.Looks like Rick gave you good information.Good Luck Ron

Pinpoint or discriminate....in the water, wetsand.. Location..every place is different open beach, trashy..and the machine, need details before one can say how fast one should swing..

You are right Joe conditions really determine the correct sweep speed. You gain a little depth sweeping faster on larger targets but the filters will reduce the amount of weak targets heard. Another reason i like PP mode in the water is in disc if you are moving to fast it can chop a signal. But in PP since it sizes a target you have to train your ear to the weaker signals too especially if you hunt ver fast. I sometimes hunt in PP even in trash. It separates targets better since its not affected with the long recovery you get in disc. You can unmask some of those near targets.
