Survey- When does the ground freeze in your neck of the woods?

I just pulled my detecting records for the past few years, and a couple from 1978 and 80 when I was a kid in Minnesota. Looked like in Southwest MN back then I could get out beginning/mid April and was done by the first week of November. Whether the fall date was due to freeze up or just too cold not positive, but do remember getting out as soon as the ground thawed as I do now.

Here in Southern Wisconsin looks like season usually runs from first week of March through end of December. We've been frozen for more than a week; so this year was an early freeze up for us. Last year we had a thaw and I got out of few times in January.

How about the rest of the country?

How far south does a fellow have to go to get a fix?

Hey Chris, Here on LI. NY. we can still hunt the farms, only frozen about 1 " or so, it's not to bad diggin, The woods you can dig a lot longer. This yr. is alot better than last, the ground froze early, We'll see this weekend, it's been pretty cold at night, time will tell

SW Iowa, We've got around 6" snow. It started freezing about 3 weeks ago I think. Came fast.Youll have to go to Missouri as far as I can tell.

Hi I'm in west central Colorado on the Utah border It doesn't freeze deep ever here. Not much snow and inch or so then gone in a week or so. I head out into the deserts of Utah and you can dig all winter ghost towns and such. HH george In colorado

i live in dubuque iowa , last year i detected thru the 2nd week in jan , this year 1st week dec it was over

Here in St. Louis area, if it freezes, it rarely lasts more than a week or two. Usually about 3-5 days of temps above 40 during the day will soften up the ground, so it is possible to hunt off and on throughout the winter. HH, Mike.

It is four feet in the MN/WI area because of frost. I remember visiting a buddy in NC and thought the contractor was screwing him with foundation being poured pretty much right on top of the ground and wussy 2x4 roof on a low pitched roof. I was wrong.

Here in Maryland the weather is warm one day and cold the next. I have hunted in January without any problem. If the ground is frozen one day it can thaw very fast with a few warmer days. Different from New England where I grew up. Once it got cold it stayed cold.

When it gets "COLD"...Lol just kidding a little about now the ground is freezing Great lakes area.
