Surprising find in the woods !:clapping:

July 4th was blazing hot in Ct but GF was working and I wanted to get out for awhile. I figured I'd head for a local wooded area where it would at least be shady! I found evidence of a small road or drive and a bit of stone formation so I started to swing. My first signal rang sweet, cursor in upper right. At about 5 inches I pulled up what appeared to be a small scabbard tip. Too small for a bayonet scabbard and I could see designs on it through the dirt coating.
When I got home and rinsed it off I was surprised to see that it was SILVER! It also had remnants of leather still in the opening!! My guess is that it's for a small dagger with possibly a triangular blade. By the craftsmanship and design details I would think it's 18th century (1700's). At first I thought the open end was broken but it's actually typical design cut into the edges. The piece measures 2+1/2 in long and just under 1/2 in at the widest. Made me pretty happy!
At one point I dug a memorial penny, then next to it, another - then another. A small area was ringing with signals but it was too darn hot to be digging memorials! Then I was also finding wheats. Well wheats = silver? Long story short after 24 memorials and 17 wheats I called it quits. Apparently someone lost a mess of pennies in one small area. Still more signals left but for a later time - maybe some silver will turn up. Wheats were from 40's and 50's and the newest memorial was 1964. Probably a 1964 spill. Also found a neat clock key.
