Surprise find ( kinda long)

The city that I live it is tearing up a bunch of streets in an old section of town. A friend and I went down to see if we could get permission to hunt. The job foreman gave us permission, but warned us about the movement of heavy equipment on the sight. They were tearing up the asphalt in front of a business and when they were done we went to work. The first thing I detected was about a foot below the bottom of the curb and gave me a solid quarter reading. I dug down a couple of inches and recovered this find. I could not tell what it was, but I was thinking it was some kind of jewelery. I tossed it in my bag and continued the hunt which by the way only turned up a few horse shoes. I was very disappointed. When I got home I tried to brush the debri off the item I had found, but it did not come off. I soaked it in water without any luck, then I dropped it into some vinegar. After a while I was able to see that it was a locket. I was able to get it to open and found nothing inside. I soaked the locket for the night and in the morning I could see that it had fallen apart. The frame appears to be gold but the other parts are just gold plated lead or nickel. I also noticed that on one of the square pieces there were 4 small stones that you can see in the photo. Two stones are the color of emeralds and the other two look like diamonds. I don't think the locket can be saved, but any gold can be salvaged. I am going to take it to a jewler and see what he thinks. Thanks for looking, Dennis in Idaho

That's great that you have permission to hunt there. I wouldn't give up. There's got to be silver, etc. there. Consider the age and history of the town. Where people gathered and what was there years ago. Is there any "history" of the town on a website that you can research? Hope your jeweler can tell you something about the locket. Keep us posted.

Oh I won't give up. This is just one construction sight in the city that we had not hunted yet. We have recovered silver and relics at other sights in town since the construction began. After 30 years of detecting I finally found my first silver dollar at one of the construction sights. My hunting pardner just recovered his first Barber half, not more than a block away from where we were hunting. Now I want to find a coin just like the one you found. I will keep you posted on the locket. Have a good one and Happy Hunting, Dennis in Idaho

...Ah, hope springs eternal. I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've said that about an area - I could quit detecting an just buy the coins and jewelry I want.

I know I'm sounding like a wet blanket here, since much of what we do is based on hope and the thrill of discovery. But after 20 years at this, I have found that you never really know what went on in an area. Even with what you think is definitive data from research, it still comes down to the coil swingin'. Everyting else is a crap shoot, where you are playing the odds.

The only time I'm certain that silver is in an area is when I find it.
Until then, I search because I love to do it.
