Surfdigger's Tip Clip #8....filling holes....(Video)

This is a tip that should be but isn't practiced by nearly enough of us....this should be as automatic as putting the find in your pouch !!

I too fill my wet sand holes. It's called the "high tide" and it happens 2x per day. And even faster than that (20 seconds later) when you're fighting the heavy storm-driven surf, at the water's edge, on deserted beach days, during winter storms.

Not all beaches are deserted all the time.....I and lots of other folks think it's a good habit to get into.....I just like to prevent non detectorists and especially town officials from using that as a reason to give us all a hard time.....hey.....I have been doing this for 36 years now and there was (hopefully still is) a detectorists code of ethics.....I guess alot of newer folks out there just aren't aware of it....that's kinda sad....

At a few beaches I hunt, even in the Winter, there are always a few locals hanging out watching. It's always good to fill your holes so they can see you are trying. It does not have to be perfect, but just walking away from a huge hole you just dug without doing anything .

Then there are beaches like A.C. where there are people around 24/7...even the nastiest Winter storms can't keep those gamblers from coming out !

Nice work Surfdigger...I do exactly what you do, and try to dump the first scoop near the hole so I can shove some sand back in with my foot prior to collapsing the hole.

Great video, Surfdigger. Now if only we could get this tip/message out there to EVERY SINGLE PERSON who hunts the beach. That includes both the regulars and the not so regulars.

Nice Video SD...I slipped in for 3 hours Sunday and that sand is like concrete once it has set on the side for a few moments, a real SOB to kick back in, And that Black sand sure gave me a sensitivity set back. Most of the time in OC Maryland I can crank it up, totally different up your way. Amazing the differences one beach to the next..................thanks again for the Vid..............................joe

Good job to remind people to backfill their holes. Unfortunately, more people than not just don't. I don't know if their
new, or just lazy. I've seen guys dig a hole right in front of the lifeguard stand and not backfill it. It's not that hard to
do, and only takes a few seconds. Letting people see you refill your holes is a quick and easy way to keep up good
relationships with the people who run the beaches. It's also not a bad idea to let them see you pick up a piece of trash
and put it in your pouch.

Tom I think that you are talking about not filling holes in semi-active surf areas.....I feel that this is just a good habit to get into generally.....check out what I am talking about in one of my earlier videos.....check out the first minute of the video and you'll get an idea what I mean....

YA know the killer here is when your on the beach and there is somone not filling in there holes i aways feel other people think its me who made the mess and where I go we have allot of joggers so I ALWAYS fill my holes, thanks for bringing this up. I have been in the areas that you go to and you always fill in your holes, Thanks Bud:clapping:

unfilled hole just look plain ugly, why leave the beach in that type of condition.

Thanks for posting these informative vids. Good job

That's a great video surfdigger! Hopefully all the old-hands already do this, but it's good for the new hunters to see what it should be like. I just got back from a week in Grand Cayman, where I actually went up and hunted many of the hotel and condo beaches. Now the property owners dont want people tearing up their beach for guests! I had many grounds keeps and security guards come out and watch me for a few minutes. I would smile, wave and hold up one of the nails or screws I just dug (point up!) drop it in my bag and fill in my hole. I was never asked to leave from any location. My point with that story is that we can hunt prime gold ring areas if we take the owners / guests / other beach goers considerations to heart.
