Hello looking for some advice. I have this machine and it has the big coil the 6+12 I guess it is. I want to change it out for a smaller coil. Can anyone give me some advice on or as to what coils are compatible with this machine, I use this machine on the beaches but it has never been under water I just need a smaller coil I guess it may be easier to pinpoint with it. I have been using this for about two years and I still can't figure it out for pinpointing. I have even tried using the side of the coil as described in Clive's book.

Thanks in advance Butch in NH

Hi DJ,

I have been using the DF for a while now and have some pin pointing problems too!

I think it helps a bit to tweek the adjustments a bit before you start digging to see if you can narrow your signal.

Somehow it seems to help and I lost only one signal last time out.

I have a Surf DF PI also, it does take a while to get used to locating the center when you get a tone. Iron targets spread wide when you get a tone, gold and silver are very narrow and are easier to dig. When starting out, a large scoop is almost a must with the DF. I have been working with a small sand scoop and it really gets frustrating some times - not to mention when small things pass thru the holes, I found an earing hanging in my basket by luck after digging it a few times. It was a narrow signal so I would not just pass it up. If you can get to a quiet beech when it is raining (no people around) you can really listen to the tone and move over it a lot to learn center, kinda Zen like - good luck

I ordered one from my dealer the other day it came yesterday.

move the coil slow when trying to pinpoint, your machine will continually balance itself so its not responding to the target. At a certain point it will only react when you move the center of the coil over the target. Then the key is making sure you are digging center of the coil which can be difficult with the big coil, and that you have a big enough scoop, because your target might be quite deep.
