Sure sign summer is done, Humming birds left here yesterday.

They always seem to leave around the 15 of Sept here. Really enjoy watching them right outside the windows at the feeders. For a tiny bird, they sure rough each other up fighting about position on the feeders. Hard to believe a bird so small, with the amount of wings beats per minute could fly that far, yet they do it.

I have 3 feeders here. They suck up a gallon of nector every day!!! I mix 6 cups of sugar in 1 gallon of water. They stay here all year!! It gets crazy around sunset, they fight for each station. Sometimes there will be 2 or 3 sharing each flower!! I would say there are around 200 hummingbirds that depend on me. I will try and take a short video of the action at sunset here this weekend.
Thank goodness for Costco and their 50lb bags of sugar!!!

They arrive in April and leave Sept. I get a lot of enjoyment out of them. Had a few land on my hand. One very delicate bird, yet they pound each other for space on the feeders. Would like to see the video.

a week and a half ago they were swarming by the dozens! It is impossible to get a good count but it was easy to see a dozen at one time on the deck and we have 4 other feeders in the flower beds around the house. If a person wants a lot of hummers have a lot of feeders. They will drive each other off.

It might not be as much a problem for those of you that have lots of open space but those in close neighborhoods need more than one feeder. We have at least 7.

My next door neighbor came over one day last year and he was stunned at the number of the little suckers flying around. He is right next door, about a hundred yards away and has a few. I told him to get more feeders because as his get to bickering they just come over here and pretty much stay. He put a couple more up and had many more this year.

Last year I kept track of how much nectar I made and it was over 14 gallons and this year there was more. I only have one feeder out now to handle the stragglers but have seen most of the stragglers on the flowers. We had a close frost the other morning. I was 32.7 when I got up and my buddy, four miles away was a 28 degrees. He lost a lot of his stuff.

The will be soon gone.

It is hard to see at times as the camera has a lousy zoom but you can see the little suckers. Watch in HD if you have a good connection

Nice and clear.... They are fun birds to have around. Very entertaining for us retired folks. One hit the window this year and I picked him up and just let him rest in my hand. He stayed there for quite a while then kind of moved to my finger, sat there for a bit, then finally flew off. You would never know he was on there if you didn't see him. We had way more last year, and I was wondering if some got caught in a storm on the way down or up. Only about half of as many as last year..... Geo-CT

screen and I can aim it. I have never held one though

I think that I will put a couple of feeders out this coming spring and see if any show up. Kelley (Texas) :)

I am putting feeders out next year. I wish you could train one to land in you hand so that you could play with it. Kelley (Texas) :)

Heck, down there in Texas they might be around all year long, I don't know:shrug:

I had a service call to a old house with an open veranda and windows,as I walked up the stairs I saw a little bird fluttering around the glass.

I grabbed it ,it was light like a big moth, and let it out.I also had a blue jay in the greenhouse it was light also.
