SuperTune

How often and when do you guys decide to run your Vaqeuro (or Cibola) supertuned?

Thanks

I only super tune when I'm in an area where deep silver might be lurking and ever inch in depth counts. I never super tune at a new school or park when I'm coin shooting and jewelry hunting. I set the threshold at a very slight hum and switch over to the discriminate mode. Set that way I can switch back and forth between modes to help determine if its trash or not. Also that setting makes checking the ground balance a lot quicker. Just push the big red button and move the coil up and down for quick ground balance check.

Great information right there for me. I never thought about that but it makes sense. :)
I was wondering this morning about soil changes over a hunting area and needing to balance it during the hunt.

Tabman is exactly correct. I hardly ever turn threshold up high. Mostly just try to turn sens up as high as possible.

I really thing the te

rm super tuning is kind of a joke. Its ready just turning sens and threshold up.

It should just be turning up your detector.

I thought I was the only one that used this method to check ground balance... this is the first post I have seen
mentioning this method.
Another good reason not to supertune!!!

Oh ok. So you guys are rarely running it turned up?
With that in mind, makes me wonder where is a good place to run the threshold then. I very rarely run all metal.

Relic hunting or at the beach.

Or even tot lot, your going to want to dig every target because its so easy so make um all sound loud.

I started out running super tuned all the time and found myself digging a lot of deep pieces of farm implements (plow tips, parts of big iron chains, accessory retaining pins and big nuts and bolts) that were not discriminated out when super tuned. Reading the forums, before I actually joined any, I learned about sizing with the pinpoint and other techniques and started using a threshold that was usable for pinpointing. I was no longer digging deep big iron junk and, for a given amount of hunting time, there was a great increase in the number of good targets dug.

Now I only supper tune when looking for relics in places where I am willing to dig all iron.
Cheers,
tvr

Super tuning is really just turning up the gain, or volume received on deep targets. Won't work on the Tejon as some have suggested. I've seen videos where people try to explain how to do it, when really it's just cranking up the threshold all the way. I have found some deep targets using it that I couldn't hit any other way, but it does make the all metal and pinpoint side unusable.

Nice quiet hum. Around 10am to 1pm. Mostly.

I might have this wrong, but my audio background tells me that ALL the hits are still there with the thresh turned down to a hum, but the DYNAMICS of a weak sigal VS a strong signal are made more equal by turning up the thresh, thus making it less likely to miss a very weak (or deep) hit.
Tests in my test garden found no actual depth gained by pegging the thresh, just the volume level of weak signals.
Since this discovery, I run thresh at barely humming. This gives better signal strength info and makes switching to all metal for pinpointing or detecting much more handy.
I just run the phones a little hotter so I don't miss the peeps.
Please let me know if I'm on the correct track here Monte.
Also, that 2-3" you mentioned would be the distance between the location of the two switches on the V and modded C, not any difference in performance?
Some of the vids of the V I've seen, look like there's a slight delay on the report when sweeping a target compared to the C?

Pretty sure Tesoro says that higher thres gives more depth. They dont say it directly but they say supertune gives more depth.

deathare,

If you want to turn up the threshold on your Vaquero, try it out and report back here on the Tesoro Forum and tell us how well it worked out for you. I would be willing to bet that you'll turn the threshold down to a "just audible" hum, because "super tuning" is to be used when checking out deep, weak and small signals, or in very "clean" target free areas, then returned back to a normal "just audible" setting. If you are running with your Vaquero "super tuned" in a trashy place, it will drive you buggy with all the noise. Check out my post "Super Tuning the High Gain/ Low Noise
