Super 12 vs White SEF WHICH ONE TO BUY?

Hello all,

I would like some feedback/opinion on which coil is better of the 2 between the whites super 12 mono vs. the new white 10"x12" SEF. I am using the V3i and most of my hunting is done in the woods so I don't want to go any larger. I would like to gain a bit of depth. I am a relic hunter so take that into consideration as well. I would really appreciate some feedback on them as well as opinions on them. I am leading towards the Super 12 as that is what one of my friends is recommending but at the same time he had good things to say about the SEF so I am on the fence.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing everyones comments

I have orderd the 12x10 sef,but do not own the super 12 but i think the super 12 will not get hung up on brush and branches like the 12x10 sef would if most of your hunting is done in woods,i orderd the sef coil because i hunt in open fields.have you read thread on here about the sef coil.?:under NEW SEF COIL.:

Isn't the Super a concentric coil? If so, the 12x10 would be the better choice if you are hunting mineralized ground because DD coils do a better job of handling it. I have a 12x10 and it hangs up less on branches and stuff in the woods than my 10" round coil which is also an open coil...Due to there being less open space on the 12x10 as it has "webbing" that helps to glid over stuff and not snag. On the other hand, it's easiest enough to take some corruplast (that plastic that looks like cardboard that they make signs out of...Very durable and waterproof). If you see some illegal sign stuck on a telephone pole or something selling diet pills or junk like that they are a good source of this stuff. Just don't touch any political signs as that's illegal, but most cities have laws against commercial signs on poles or on tree lawns, so you'd be doing the city a favor by removing one if they are against the law there. Cut it to size and zip tie to your coil. Melt holes for the zip ties so the plastic is less prone to rip with abuse.

Definitely hold off on buying the SEF..... Until Kellly co or SEF have a quality control assurance. You could end up buying a dead coil or one that overloads at a gain of 13 and it the worst emi magnet you could imagine.

My super 12 is magnitudes more stable and has found coins at 12" with no exaggeration. I look forward to getting a good 10x12 but I just see the quality control not there.

It must be an issue with getting them up to V-Rated specs or something, because the 12x10 is a solid quality coil with no stability issues on other detectors. Most people say, as least in the Minelab crowd, that these coils are more stabile and allow higher sensitivity levels than the stock coils. I bet it's an issue with meeting the technical specifications required in V-Rated coils or something that are making them a bit eratic. Not only do I find the 12x10 to be extremely stable on my machine, but it allows me to run at higher sensitivity settings than the stock coil in the exact same place and seems less prone to EMI.

I used the Super 12 when I had my V3i and it was a great coil. Very deep and I agree with holding off on the SEF until there is more information about it. Another thing to think about is when I spoke with White's about "outside" coils and which coil selection to make to work best with these coils, they said that their coils and machines have been calibrated to work with each other and using any other brand will provide less accurate depth and ID's. I would get the Super 12 if I were you. It was designed to work with the V3i and it works very well. White's has a coil for every need for the V series and so I never ventured out for something else. I wanted accurate depth indicator and accurate ID's and White's has assured me that sticking with their coils will assure this to be the case. Hope this helps but it is just my opinion as I have not trued the new white SEF coils. I have heard, however from a couple of guys that have tried them, that the most noticeable difference between the "old black" SEF's and the new white ones is the color. They didn't notice any gains in performance. Again, just what I heard, I like to try things myself before making up my mind. Either way the Super 12 is tried and tested and it works. HH -Marc

i have the white sef 12x10 coil and love it.. more stable than my 10 in d2 coil. gets great depth.. better balanced and feels lighter than d2..

What coils others use may not be best for you. The DD/SEF coils excel in mineralized ground while the concentric coils do best in low to medium mineralized ground. Talk to others in your area and see what works best for them. I would also suggest holding off on a SEF for the White's line. I used one of the White 10X12 coils over the weekend and it is not all that great. It overloaded at RX11 Boost and the noise level and signal % are the same as the two black coils that we tested it against. The best advantage of the White 10X12 is the 22.5 frequency is better nulled and can handle an RX15 and it is slightly lighter.

The black SEF aren't nulled enough to handle the 22.5 kHz of the V3i.
