Super 12 noisier than stock coil??

Canewrap

New member
Just decided to get a Super 12 for my machine and have been playing with it around my yard. The ground that normally allows me to turn the gain up to +3 on the stock coil gets real squirrelly if I push it past +2. This is moderate ground, so its right about in the middle between good ground and hot ground. Is this normal for a Super 12?

Canewrap,

I don't have a 12" but as the coil gets bigger it is seeing more ground under it and therefore more minerals. My guess would be its normal. Rob

It has been a while since I have used the Super 12 Bill so I just don't remember specifics. I do know that a DD coil works better for me than a conical, even if the DD is smaller by 2 inches. As a general rule, the bigger the coil the less gain you can use because the larger coil is "seeing" a lot more ground at one time. The higher the mineralization, the worse it gets too. This is why a DD coil usually works better with a higher gain in highly mineralized ground. The knife edge characteristics of the DD is "seeing" much less ground at one time.

That's one of the advantages of supporting a local dealer if you have one. Most will let you do that if you spend your $$ with them.

Yep, too bad some of don't have a dealer close by so we're stuck losing money while we search for the right coil.

I've always had the local dealer problem, so I know what you mean. That's why it is good when guys review what they buy. If I had a super 12" I would have posted it is noisy. The fact is it is not a bad coil. This is a characteristic of bigger concentric coils. That's why the 6x10 DD is quieter then the 9.5 concentric. A 12" DD would be more quiet, the 12" will probably shine in lower mineral soil. Rob
