sunray type probe for a teknetics mark 1

just wanted to know if anyone knows how the sunray probes are made or have any pics of one that has been disassembled? i would like to build one for my mark 1. i know there isnt a whole lot to the probes and that they are housed in pvc i think. if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your help and happy hunting.
 
Why in the world would anyone need a pinpointer for a Mark-1 with a standard 7-1/4 coil or for any detector with an Ultra Slow sweep speed and an No Motion all metal mode for that matter. I could never understand why people use these! Isn't it easier to just leave the detector in all metal after pinpointing and just grab a handful
of dirt and wave it over the coil after you remove it from the ground? It seems a Lot simpler and Faster to me..
 
Dugger,,,,,,a few reasons. Some of us just like to build sh@p, see how it works. We are the same folks that tear crap apart as soon as we get it......hehehahahahheheha.
Occasionally these pinpointers can also come in handy when up against a wall/foundation.
But speaking for myself I live in an area that has alot of gravel/small rocks. Many times I just know there is something good there and deep... BUT becuase I frown on using a shovel in someone's yard and my 7" screwdriver can't tell if I'm hitting a rock or and object and suspecting It may even be a few rusty objects causing a false center - I'd rather just have something handy to lessen the size of the hole I gotta dig. I suppose in time I'll get good enough with my Mark to not have to use the pinpointer so much. But for now........

Whites came out with a Series 3 probe many years ago long before SunRay started making probes, The Whites Series 3 share the same kHz as the Mark 1..... A friend gave me one of these old Whites probes, I'll try and dig it up.

Also, You can use an XLT SunRay probe by changing out the connector on the coil and the pig tail connector on the probe. Only the XLT kHz is slightly different so target ID will be a little off, But for pin pointing doesn't really matter especially using the probe in all-metal.

I've a question. Isn't the Sunray and all the other lookalikes simply a ferrite core coil tuned to the proper Op Freq with appropreate adaptors and maybe a switch to chose the path of the T/R circuit......either through the ferrite core or air core coil??? As has been stated we aren't interested in ID'ing the target with the probe so it doesn't even have to be precisely tuned. These usually run in AM mode anyways. I must admit I really know nothing of the matter, thats why I was asking for a circuit drawing myself, but to me it just makes sense that the probe is simply a tuned ferrite coil enceased in a chunk of PVC.
Am I wrong?? Is there more to the circuit?? Phil

Very Good explanation!! I just aquired a couple Whites Bullseye II pinpointers that a guy threw in with the detector to
sweeten the deal! Now after reading your post I think i will save then for a time they might come in handy!! Again! very good
