sunray s-8 or the 8" tornado ??

Not much of a diffrence , I have use them each one I think the S-8 is a tad bit deeper, not by much , but the 800 minlabe is a better quality in my opinoin the 800 has a really nice cable and is rock solid the cable on the S-8 is a bit chincy, I alsways wanted to try each one and now I have, sens cn be run hotter on the S-8 and it is a bit deeper, if I had to chose i would keep the S-8 as I like as much depth as possible

Maybe if gunnar lends me his S-8 I can put them in a head to head test lol. In all seriousness, I can't tell you how the S-8 performs. Although I have heard /read similiar to what Gunnar states (S-8 is a little better in depth compared to the tornado 800 ) Maybe in seperation too? I love the tornado 800 that baby "smoked" out quite a few old coins for me in heavy iron this year. Also, the S-8 is a full 8 inches in diameter where the tornado measures 7 1/4" and both are waterproof. Minelab lists the tornado 800 is being submersible to 1 meter. Sunray doesn't indicate how deep. Hang in there more will "chime in" and give their opinion and experiences with these little coils. - Jim

I just ordered an 8" Tornado for my Sov GT, I was gooing to order the Sunray 8 but the warranty changed my mind. Minelab - 3 years, Sunray - 1 year......

thanx tiggar,, warranty definitely something to consider

Tiggar, the 800 coil is my favorite coil.I have used both coils and in the ground and air test have found the small Tornado coil deeper.I used my Sovereign with the 800 coil in a seeded comp hunt this summer and it did an outstanding job.Slow sweep speed will still get the max depth, but the 800 coil hits hard at a fast sweep speed with still excellent depth. The Sunray is a great coil, but the 800 is better. Good Luck Ron

thanks for the info Ron, I wish Minelab would offer the Sovereign GT like they do the Excalibur - either an 800 or a 1000 model. as it is, they only come with the 10" in the package, and if you want the 8" you have to buy it as an accessory....

Try different dealers, you might find one who will switch out coils for you.

One thing for sure is the smaller tornado coil is the lighter of the two. I have the 8" sunray I picked up used but I prefer the 8" tornado, depth is about the same as is seperation but the weight is noticable. and lets be honest here, 3/4" difference isnt a whole lot of difference for coverage.
