Sunray FZ12 coil?

88junior

Well-known member
I have been wanting one of these but a guy by the name Nasa Tom said that he liked the Fisher 10-1/2" coil better and he is the man on CZ'S! I always wanted to try one but when they come up for sale you either miss out on a great deal or they are priced a little to much for me. I live in a area where the soil is pretty mineralized and don't know really how this thing would do in my ground conditions. Anyone ever use them in bad ground? If so tell us how it done!

Just a fact of life the bigger the coil the more easily masked and certainly big coils work well in big fields or perhaps seashores...Sunray makes expensive excellent products
and everyone has their opinions but in my opinion 12 incher is a clear winner however they are no longer made and have gone out of sight price wise even for a used one...

Yeah I knew they are the same person!! Thanks for the info Dan! I believe I will just use my 10-1/2" coil it does pretty good I plan on eventually getting the 5" coil to complete my collection! I use the CZ-5 and with the 8" coil I get 11" on a clad dime on air test so it's pretty hot!

I don't feel there is going to be a huge difference in performance between the FZ12 coil and the Fisher 10 1/2 " coil, especially for that kind of money. You will get more use out of the 5" coil and might not take it off the detector once you see how well it performs. It will hit dimes at 8 inches easily and works
great in trashy parks.

Someone might pay 325.00 for the FZ12, but they would want to have it worse than I do.............HH

I wish I knew someone I could borrow an FZ12 from so I could compare it to my 10.5 fisher. I bought the 10.5 thinking I would use it alot, but the seperation really drops off compared to the 8", I only use the 10.5 at the beach and open fields, which is about 10 percent of my hunting time. Got a 5" on the way, hope it works as well as the 5.75 on my Vaquero.

I have a Tom D. 'validated' 1021 CZ-3D. He validated to 12.0" on a clad dime in his Florida dirt with the 8" coil..
I have the 5", 8", 10.5", AND FZ-12 coils. By the way the FZ-12 is a 12.5" coil and weighs 1oz less than the 10.5" Fisher coil.

Now my dirt here in eastern Nebraska is somwhat mineralized. My 8" coil will only get a silver dime to about 8 1/2". That's it... period.

A couple months ago a nearby golf course closed down. It is 100 years old. 109 acres of old coins and jewelry that have never seen a metal detector.
The city made it a public park. So now it can be detected! The city allows metal detecting in city parks.
The problem I realized right off the bat was the old coins are deep. Since it was a golf course it was well manicured and mowed often. All those grass clippings
over the years made a lot of soil. Coins got deep. And add to that relandscaping over the years, sod added, etc. Well stuff is deep. But the good news: not really
a lot of junk. The perfect spot for the CZ and a big loop. I really hit it hard with the 10 1/2" loop. And was making some great finds. Could get to about 9 1/2" on
a dime. But never to 10". So I bought a FZ-12 off this forum for $250. It was worth it to me. The FZ-12 has gotten me 3 silver dimes at 10 1/2" so far. I have done a
lot of comparrison testing there between the 2 loops. The FZ-12 is 1"+ deeper than the Fisher 10 1/2" loop and it pinpoints better. I know Tom D. likes the 10 1/2"
loop better but I am just telling you what I see. My son also has a CZ-3D and we hunt a lot together. The FZ-12 trumps the Fisher 10 1/2" for depth here. I use a Fisher
chest mount harness so swinging the big loops are not a problem. That is all I use now on the old golf course is the big loops. Deep coins and rings there.

Oh...ya, forgot to mention. How does the CZ do on silver? Well I see a couple other posts here about the CZ being a nail finder. I think I dig maybe 1 nail every 3 trips.
And the silver? I am not giving the name/location out of this old golf course but I have been going there 2 times a week for the last 2 months with the CZ-3D:
103 silver coins, 9 rings, and a coffee can full of wheats. Not counting nickels/clad/tokens/etc. You see you don't need a Deus or ETrac to find the goodies. In here you need DEPTH.

P.S.: The 5" loop is a great loop in junk! You will be using it a lot.

Lip Service I think the ones who are complaining about nails are just starting out and haven't mastered the use of their detectors yet. As time goes by they will see they picked the right detector!! I will always have a CZ in my arsanal!!:detecting:

I gotta say 88Junior is right on about the nails. I have felt irritation reading these guy who go ballistic on a great machine they have had a week or two and slam it for not working perfectly for them. I love my CZ and I love small coils (spoiled or lazy? both?) I have a 10.5 and use it in some circumstances. I see my arsenal as a tool box to draw from and expertise is knowing what to use in a given situation. There are times an fz12 is the perfect choice. I don't think I have enough of those opportunities to justify the cost. Lip totally does. Lucky dog! HH!
Tom not D

In my experience hunting in both upstate NY as well as all over California with a CZ-70 Pro, the Sunray coil is far supurior to the Fisher coil, BUT in theory the Fisher coil should do better on coins on edge due to it's elleptical concentric design (great idea, as close as you'll ever get DD on the CZ line). I actually really like the Fisher coil too, but it is HEAVY, and I've found the FZ12 to be a great coil on both the beach as well as turf.

I've got the same sitiuation here where I live. A golf course that had been in existence since 1930 became a public park last September and I was the first person to hunt it after it became a park. i was detecting while the golf course manager was packing the moving truck. I made some nice finds with my CTX and E-Trac but the place has dried up. I now use a new CZ3D that Tom calibrated and wth the 8 inch coil, it goes just as deep as my CTX and E-Trac do on two dmes I have buried there at slightly over 9 inches. So now I'm thinking I should get a Fisher 10.5 and see if I can squeeze some more deepies out. I have so far found about 30 wheats, 15 silvr dimes, 4 silver quarters and 1 walking liberty. The vast majority of the finds have been past 8 inches. I'm sure there is a lot more there that is too deep for my 8 inch coil. I guess I better pull the trigger.

Get it. My 10.5" gets a little over an inch deeper than the 8" and I hear the FZ12 will do better if u can find one.
