Sunray DX1 probe

I am thinking about getting the Sunray DX1 probe for my MXT. The probe is not cheap so I am looking for some advice before I buy. Anybody use the Sunray probe? Thanks Dennis in Idaho

Don't think about it just get it if you can afford it. I use mine all the time. They are great. IMHO that is.

Hi Dennis,

I use a DX-1 probe on my MXT. I hunt a lot of soft turf sites with primarily clad targets to 4 or 5 inches. I seldom use the probe to ID targets but the capability is sometimes useful.

In my soil areas the DX-1 will dead on pinpoint a quarter at over 4 inches if I turn the GAIN up to +3. Just do not forget to turn it back down to where it was before switching back to the main coil. I than work most of these coins out of the ground with a brass probe. In other words the DX-1 allows me to retrieve the coin and get back up swinging before I could finish cutting a plug. The handheld pinpointers I have used get no where near the depth of the DX-1.

Like you, I had a hard time justifying spending all of that money for a DX-1. Very quickly I realize I should have gotten my DX-1 sooner. It enhances the fun factor in coin shooting.

If you get one, make sure it has a straight cable from the switch box all the way to the probe. Some of the old style with a spiraled cable are still around. The spiraled cable model is prone to developing broken wires in the cable.

If you shaft mount the probe, only use one clamp. Makes it a lot easier to snap the probe in and remove it. In almost 2 years my probe has never fallen out of the one clamp. Another thing, run a rattail file over the sharp edges of the clamp. I got a few cuts before I removed the sharp edges on mine. (Slow learner)

Have fun, Bob

Thank you very much. I think you sold me. HH Dennis in Idaho

Sure hope it works out for you Dennis. I certainly don't regret buying my DX-1. I have thoroughly enjoyed using it.

If you get a very loud pinpoint, do a detune or 2 by double clutching the pinpoint trigger and you can get a super accurate pinpoint. You are going to love it.

Have fun, Bob

I went over to Gerry's Metal Detectors in Boise, Idaho today and he fixed me up with the DX-1 probe. I was lucky to get it from Gerry today because he is headed to Ganes, Alaska Friday to hunt for gold nuggets for a couple of weeks.(lucky dog) I brought the probe home and hooked it up in about 5 minutes. Its ready to go when I am. I will let you know how it works out for me. Thanks and HH, Dennis in Idaho

One of the greatest things about the Sunray (or any probe for that matter) is when beach hunting those tiny little gold and silver earrings that fall through the scoop are found quickly with the Sunray. I hesitated when confronted with spending that kind of money on a pinpointer but looking back it was the best money I have spent in the hobby. I have used other pinpointers and nothing compares with the Sunray, NOTHING!

I wouldn't be without mine. I love my DX-1 Probe. It pinpoints better than the others that I've used and doesn't weigh much at all. You won't be dissatisfied one bit. Well worth the extra bucks. Guess you've heard all the "pros" for this sweet little jewel.
