SunRay 5" Stealth Depth Question

Hello

Thinking about picking up the 5" SunRay. Anyone know how deep then can go? I have a trashy area that should have some good coins there. The good stuff likes to hang out 5-8" deep. I'm currently using the 8" and it's hitting the good stuff fine, but would like a smaller coil for the trash.

Any suggestions? I'm also interested in the Ex 4.5x7 coil.. would this be deeper than the 5" while giving me the ability to pick through the trash?

Thanks!
DB

The Ex 4.5x7 coil has gotten rave reviews by some very good SE users around here. I love my Sunray 8" but would like to compare it to the 4.5.
I think some with the 4.5 have said there is no need for a 5" with the 4.5 in your arsenal. All hearsay though. I have neither.

I have a sunray x-5 coil on a expl 11 and I get a dime at 7" and a quarter at 9". It does very good in trash. Hope this helps.

Even though Sunray makes excellent products going to lose depth..How much depends on your ground and your expertise...Might want to try a clubmembers or talk to a learned local Explorer user for at least a ballpark figure....in your area....

So, if I was to buy another coil, and since I already have the SunRay 8", the ex 4.5x7 is probably not the way to go... is this a correct assumption?

Do you think my best option to pick through the trash is by going with the SunRay 5" in my case?

Thanks!!

I have the X5 and use it a lot with my SE. The target seperation is excellent as is the sensitivity on small targets. In MY soil, I have no problem finding dimes at 5-6 inch range (sens. 18, Fast ON) provided I swing the coil slowly. I typically hunt a trashy area with the X8 coil first, then go back over with the X5. I always find coins that I missed with the larger coil. I will admit that it does takes a fair amount of patience when hunting with a small coil as it is like painting a battleship with a hockey puck.

Good to know. I think I'll pull the trigger on the X-5. Nice comparison on the hockey puck!!!

Yeah, I liked that comparison when I first heard it on another forum. Don't forget to get an extra lower rod so you can quickly swap coils. HH

Don't really notice to much difference in depth, but the 5" Sun Ray gets better separation because the double d is 2 inches shorter in length at the center then the 4.5 x 7. I also seem to prefer it being round, or I should say wider across, for some reason I have a tendency to catch the leading edge of the coil on the ground when swinging the 4.5 x 7. It's probably just me but I think it's more the oblong shape. After I bought the 4.5 x 7 I realized my error, it's only an inch shorter than the eight inch I already had, the double d signal goes lengthwise, from front to back on the coil along the double d center, so if your looking to pick through trash, the five inch is the correct choice. I really bought the 4.5 x 7 as an after thought while buying a 14 inch, mostly because of all the hype people were posting at the time. I plan on air testing the two of them to find out specifically how wide there comparative signals are and the depth differences. Should prove interesting and I'll post the results. However, the snow is gone and I found seven wheats in the same hole today with a silver war nickel to boot, so you know I'll get right on that testing crap for sure. Hope this helps. Good hunting to you.:bouncy:

Part of my purchase deal with the SE was that it came with the stock coil and the ML 800. I already had the Sunray 8" I bought to use with my XS.

Immediately I noticed that the ML 800 (What is considered their 8" coil) is much smaller than the Sunray 8. It is about 6.5 inches where the SR is a true 8.

Once I used the ML800 I feel in love with it. It gets good depth and very stable. It is as small as I need it to be in tight places and in trash, yet the depth compares favorably with the stock coil.

I haven't tried the Sunray 5. I do like the SR 8, and I used it most of the time with my XS. I have a 5.3 coil I use on my DFX and the ML800 has just as much utility for the SE as that does for the DFX.

Just thought I would share that here as I always assumed that the ML 8 and SR 8 would be pretty much the same. They are not. I guess it also explains why ML doesn't make a 5" coil.
