Sunday's hunt, more large cents

Patriot 1776

New member
Went back to the old spot where i found my 1819 large cent from sat. Again, small wooded area across from an old cemetery. I don't like getting to close to the cemetery because people are thinking your digging 6 feet for a body , LOL
The area that I have been working has been hit pretty hard. So i went into the thick stuff, where i could barely fit the coil between fresh new pine trees. Not much room, but after 3 hrs, I found a copper plate with some vague writing on it, again to worn to id, a worn Buffalo nickle and 1825 &1838 large cent. Everything was only around 4 inches deep.
The CTX had no problem a course, I think with the size of the coins any detector would have worked.
I had a few ticks on me , watch out when your in the thick stuff.
Happy hunting.

Mud
Thank Mudpuppy,
Your right, the ticks are out, any suggestions, I heard there is a spray to put on your clothes?

I dont know dude..nothing has worked for me....for some reason they like other people better than most, mosquitoes too..so it must be body 'pheromone chemistry' or something, anyway, I'm a by gosh tick magnet! I once had 11 of them stuck to my back/neck after a short 1/2hr walk through the deep grass...So thats what I recommend, hunt with a pal who is a tick magnet, and let him go first!...

Try any spray thats 100% deet...try Vicks Vaporub on your ankles, pants and socks...those little buggers will ride on home with you in your gear and get you in your sleep if you are a tick magnet...I gave up and just live with them and try to feel them crawling on me and toss them before they dig in....ticks, mosquitoes and leeches rally like my hemoglobin for some reason I cannot figure out...Its full of alcohol, nicotine and caffiene maybe..
Mud.

Repel puts out a spray that is supposed to Kill Ticks, Mosquitoes and Mites (redbugs, chiggers). The name is Permanone. The contents are Permethrin 0.5%

Spray it on your clothing (outside) and alloy it to dry prior to putting on the clothing. One application will last for a few days.

I have used it in the past and it worked. I do not like finding a tick crawling on me after I take off my clothes after a days detecting.

Yeah, check your balls - they seem to like that area. Handy if you got a woman to do it for ya - at 50+ its hard to find the glasses with the right focal length for the job.

Forget the ticks...I'll take em for some big pennies

Your right, a few large cents is worth it , a few hungry ticks will always be there.

PSS1963,

Yeah, until you get Lyme disease. My mother had that and it sucks! Watch out for those little ticks - the ones that could "river-dance" on the tip of a ball-point pen. I didn't know those existed until I spent some time on my brother's farm last summer - "Eee-gads-and-little-fishes" as my grandpa used to say. :yikes:

Alcohol can't hurt but it might not help if the tick has already attached himself. By that point whatever he might be carrying is already far enough below the surface of the skin that topicals like alcohol won't reach it. Best to educate yourself on the symptoms of tick-borne diseases and seek medical help at the first sign of them. If I recall correctly, Lyme disease is fairly treatable if caught early but harder to treat if you let it go. Keep careful track of where you were bitten - this will assist the doctors in diagnosis.

Most importantly, don't rely on anything that people tell you (including me). A qualified medical professional can best give the correct advice and effective treatment. :nerd:

Hopefully the tick has not penetrated to far in the skin.
Very important to make sure you get the head out when you pull them out, I use hydro peroxide.

Very nice Largies...Seems a lot of them and the V and Shield nickels are turning up this year...Maybe it was the cold long winter...
