Sunday's Finds

Went to one of my close by spots. I've been working this place for a couple years now with other detectors. Did ok today, found a '43 Merc, '64 Rosie, a '76 Kennedy Half, 3 Wheats, 5 Quarters, 4 Dimes and 9 Memorial Pennys. That Rosie is the first one i've found and the Merc is the seventh. That's 8 silver coins so far using the Se. Was a good learning day for me. Starting to figure out those rusty iron and screw caps signals. Those rusty nails and such look good on the screen but it's the sound that makes the difference, same with the screw caps. I'll still dig those hits for a while till I get some more time on my Explorer. Anyway, thanks for looking and happy hunting. Joe.

Congrats on the silver !! Love finding those half dollars !

Yeah TwoRivers, 24 coins is one of my better days. There's alot of ground there yet. Going slow and working on each signal. Used my X-Terra70 there and dug alot more trash. I bet I didn't dig 24 pieces of trash today, which is good. I'm learning that if the tone breaks up, it's usually junk. I agree with TokenDigger, as long as i'm digging i'll dig those iffy signals. Was out about 5 hours. Woke up to light snow with less than an inch and it had almost all melted when we got out of church. Warmed up, made for a nice day. Gonna get back out there after work Tuesday.

Hey surfman,

Nice hunt! How long have you been using your SE? Eight silvers in what period of time? I should be getting mine today, and can't wait to start learning it. I keep hearing that learning the sounds on these machines is as important, if not moreso even, than on some other machines; that the screen is a good tool, but the sounds are the give-away. Seems like I'll have to put in a bunch of hours to start deciphering the sound subtleties...and that you are in the same boat.

Great job!

Steve

Steve, I got my new Explorer in mid January and was able to start using it in mid Febuary. So a little over a month. Keeping track of my hunts in a notebook at home. Found silver almost every time I went out. Getting the solid, smooth target signal is key. I've been using Brice's settings so far with the exception of his varibility setting of 10. Tried it on Saturday but will have to slowly work that in. Plan on doing some testing on that in the back yard with some different coins I have, to get used to that high pitch. Iron mask on, set a 22 is the real key I think. If you dont have Andy Sabbisch's book yet, you need it. Lots of info there with alot of setting advice. Very helpful to me. I really thought the Explorer was going to be alot harder( not saying it's easy ) to get the hang of. So far I feel i'm doing pretty good. Still got alot to learn but it sure is fun when i'm finding that silver in places that i've already hunted. Good luck with yours, have fun and give it some time in factory presets before you make alot of adjustments. I'm sure you'll do fine. HH, Joe.

Joe --

What do you mean by "variability setting of 10?"

I don't have Andy Sabisch's book yet, but it will be my next purchase. And yes, I do plan to hunt in the factory presets for awhile per advice on this forum -- is an iron mask of 22 part of those factory presets?

Great hunting by the way -- finding silver on almost every hunt is quite an accomplishment, IMO.

Steve, the variability setting is in the menu in the audio I think, not home so i'll have to check that. It's in the manual. Setting it on 10 gives the high tones a really high tone, you'll see what I mean. The factory preset for iron mask is 22, you just have to turn it on by pressing the iron mask button. I hunted without it on for the first 2 or 3 hunts then turned it on as Brice suggested. Made a big difference as you can here alot more. I think it makes the good signals sound better and the iron signals sound like iron. PM Brice about that, he'll surely have a better explanation. I messed around with the sensitivity a little but ended up going back to semi-auto 26. Alot more stable. Basicly every thing that Brice has suggested has been right on. I think that there are some places that you can raise the sensitivity but I haven't been able to yet. Clean ground maybe or a different coil might make a difference. So far I dont see any real reason to change up much. Having to much fun with it right now with the settings i'm using. Trying to get the 8x6 sef but there out of stock. Looking forward to giving that a try.

I have found everything that surfman says to be true. We got our machines about the same time and sounds like we have similar experience time. I think he is gonna get ahead of me because hunting is just about over here in Texas until it rains significantly. Now I know how the freeze guys feel. :)

Thanks much, Joe. I'll go re-read Bryce's post to me, and see if he mentions the audio thing. It's interesting what you say, turning the variability up to 10 thus making the high tones "really" high, and the iron mask giving iron an "iron" sound and maybe making the good targets sound better. Sounds like the "iron mask," if I understand correctly, is sort of a "tone break," such that iron stays lower tone, as compared to non-ferrous targets? Is this correct? Maybe Bryce will see this, or I can ask him...

bbqman -- yep, I know now how the "freeze" guys feel too; ground is getting so hard down here in the southern plains that you can't dig it; might as well be frozen! :)

Thanks Randy, the weather here has been hit and miss with some really good days mixed in. I guess i'm lucky here in lower Delaware where we get a good mix of wet and dry. Our winter isn't to bad either with only a short ground freeze. As a matter of fact I probably could have started earlier but didn't realize that there was a piece of something in the ground where I would check if the ground was still frozen. Checked a different spot and was thawed. Was in my back yard outside my back door. Oh well, felt like an idiot, grabbed my detector and went at it. BTW, my first wedding aniversary is coming up. May 15th, gonna head down to the Outer Banks, taking my Excal ( she's ok with it to! ). Gonna give it a try on the northern beaches around Nags Head. You never know what you'll find down there. Wish me luck. Joe.

Steve, all the answers are in the manual and in Andy's book. Shoot Brice a PM with reference to your questions. Get your Explorer, turn it on, noise cancel and have fun. Thats all you really need to do. The things pretty awesome right out of the box. It'll hit an 8" target in factory settings. Good luck, Joe.

Best of luck, surfman ! We normally should have perfect ground in March. This is most unusual. It usually gets dry here in July-August. This is the time when the tornado alley gets it`s reputation. It`s still not too late to get the rain however, but not looking good right now. WOW !

Man I sure hope those tornados stay away this season. Watching em on the weather channel is all I can take. Hope you get some rain soon.
