Sunday with Ace 250

I figure the old gal has 2.5 hours of battery life left now so one more hunt? Another one of those days. 56F and not a cloud in the sky. Planned to do three spots, just bark chip. The first area I went to was a spot where there are usually 5 or 6 quarters. Empty. Got on my hands and knees to do under some areas. First hit was the little charm. I brushed it off and saw Avon, dang. When I got home and cleaned it I saw it is also marked .925 so better. 1.41g. Also in the bark chip was the bullet slug. Looks like .22 or .223 to me. Also a few coins and some deep junk. Decided to stay and do the grass for a while. 41 coins and that cool button which is real heavy. The surprise was the nickel which off to the side a bit in the photo. It's a 1939 D, one of the scarcest Jefferson Nickels. I need one for my book but this one is rough. Been in the ground for quite some time.

I had nothing notched today and dug all good two way signals. I was surprised that I only had on zinc penny. Dug two or three beer cans I never would have dug with the 2500. With my new GTI 2500 muscles I have to be careful swinging the much lighter 250.

Final thought. I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad idea but if I think I would like a built in clock and timer on the 2500.

When I'm patient and swing slow I get good depth using the stock coil. Really depends on the site but down to 6 inches for coins (that's two way signals) is usual. I never measure actual depth with a ruler but my eye is pretty good. Found larger items like cans and a recent bugle mouthpiece at least 10-12 inches down. I have dug my share of one way, weaker signals, most of which seem to be junk. I know I should dig them all. In my experience the depth meter on the 250 is not accurate but can be used as a tool.

I now primarily use the GTI 2500 and get a bit deeper using the stock coil in discriminate mode. Probably down to 8 inches for coins. In all metal I've found some really deep items but no real keepers. One junk ring, a junk chain, and some modern coins. How a 2002 quarter gets buried 10-12 inches into the ground still amazes me. The depth indicator on the 2500 is much more accurate than on the 250. Surface coins sometimes give it fits, though.

Finally. I would say 80-90 percent of the rings and coins (keepers) I have dug have been 3 inches or less. I hunt primarily, schools, playgrounds, freshwater beaches, and parks.
