sunday vaquero finds

Found these two items in a cornfield while hunting with my friend deerhunter. He found a crotal bell identical to mine on saturday. They are # 7 size bells and have a nice tone to them. My other find has me kinda thinking it may be a childs spur as it is too small for an adult.
There is still a small piece of rusted iron where the rowel would have been. Any other ideas as to what it might be if not a spur???........HH

Roger

Oh my mistake. The same bell is in two different threads. Still that makes 3 posted today. 2 were in another forum.

harvey, all the crotal bells I have seen have been made of bronze, but I'm sure they were made of different materials like copper and pewter also.

Nice finds Roger & I learned something today... from time to time I notice posts about crotal bells & wondered what they were (never thought to "google" them) now thanks to your thread I have learned that they are sleigh bells. Plus I looked up what a rowel is, as they say learn something new every day. Today I have learned two things.

Steve, Learning keeps the mind healthy and I'm happy you gained something from my post. The crotal bells were used on wagons and the horse harness to warn others they were coming..... can you imagine having a 3 horse pile up in the intersection ?...lol. They were also used on sleighs it seems.
I found another crotal bell several years ago but it was the smaller #4 size with the last one found sunday being a #7 size or about 1 7/8" diameter. From my research I found the crotal bells came in sizes #1 through size #12. The smaller bells have a higher pitched ring and the larger bells are lower pitched.
I can sit here and daydream about the sound a set of crotal bells must have made as the horse and wagon bounced down the road at a brisk pace......I think it would have been a very enjoyable sound to hear and sadly one we will never get to experience. Sometimes I think it would have been nice to have
been alive in the early 1800's....but then I wouldn't have my Tesoro so I come back to reality....lol. Hope all is well up in New Yawk. Take care and HH.

Doing well up here Roger, I live in a really small town way upstate in N.Y. (only 12 miles from Canada) and our town conist of about 70% or so Amish people and they use horse and buggy/sleighs and never have seen or heard any of them with a bell. Would be neat if they did.
