Sunday Morning Token

Dirt NC

New member
I went back to my old stand-by site this morning. It's an old farm that goes well back into the 1800's. Although I hunt it regularly it still suprises me with a keeper or two once in a while. I picked this out of a iron infested area. It is a offering token from the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how old it is. If anyone knows I'd appreciate the info. Happy Hunting!

Notice it's holed for wearing around the neck. Catholic tokens fall into many categories, from exonimia like yours to medals like the familiar St Christopher or Miraculous Medals, known as "devotionals."

I dont know precisely how old it is, but Id say mid 20th century. The date on the obverse most likely indicates the founding of the Cathdral itslf, and is not a mintage date. This would be purchased, perhaps in a gift shop, and your "donation" so commemorated... sort of like those souvenir pennies you squish in a machine at the amusement park. It looks like it was gilt at one time and probably made of brass or copper.

Neat find
