Took advantage of what was probably the last "no jacket" hunt day of 2011 and decided to hit one of my sites that is absolutely filled with deep iron. I absolutely love this type of a site because I know there are still good finds to be made if you have your ears tuned in to what a coin sounds like in iron.
It isn't a science....there are no shortcuts...nothing is foolproof...no tips, settings or advice will stop you from digging a rusty nail every now and then...and it takes a ton of patience.
Finding deep coins in iron simply comes with many hours of practice....many hours of training your ears ....a little luck...a few deep, rusty nails....and a remarkable detector like the Explorer. Trust me...I STILL dig some rusty nails every now and then just like everyone else does.
I will also note that the KEY to learning the Explorer and the language it speaks IMHO is NOT any magic group of settings or "best" coil. It IS finding a group of settings that work for YOU...and then LEAVING THOSE SETTINGS ALONE over each and every deep target you come accross....for many months....then even many more months.
Each tiny setting change you make can and will change the sound you hear over coins in iron and for that matter...what deep coins like like....period.
It is impossible to learn the machine and train your ears to listen for deep coin chirps....coins in iron....coins in a null...coins in trash...etc...if you are constantly changing settings which in turn changes everything you have just trained your ears to "hear" over these exact same instances with previous settings.
A perfect example of this is variability. Bury a silver dime at 8" and listen to it with your variability at 8....then put your variability maxed at 10 and listen to that same 8" deep coin. There will be a night and day difference in what you hear.
Anyway...enough of my rambling. My lady was in the mood to hunt since it was so nice outside so I wasn't gonna' complain. I let her use one of my SE's and put the pro coil on for her since it is so light. I would have rather her used the SEF coil...but knew it would get heavy for her much faster than the pro coil would.

She has fun digging clad but I was hoping for her to be able to dig a "keeper" coin which to me is a wheatie...injun'...or silver. To her an "old" one is in the 60's...and I got a smile on my face when she got excited because she popped out a 1968 zinc cent from about 6". Seriously...she was excited and I was happy for her.
Before long she called me over to check a signal for her...and after investigating it I said..."dig that critter".
About 2 minutes later she had popped out a 1944 wheatie and her face lit up like a Christmas tree. It was just a really cool moment for her.

I ended up with 3 keepers on the long afternoon...along with 3 rusty nails
I got this sweet old injun which had the rusty nail laying directly on it as the pic will show.

I also got the old merc which was engulfed in iron from about 8"

I then ended the day with a very deep merc which came out in the clod.

It was a really fun hunt...and was made so much better when I was able to see the look of excitement on her face when she dug up an oldie.
That's what it's all about for me
