Sun Ray Probe vs. Pro Pointer?

Does anyone have experience with a Sun Ray Probe on their Garrett? How does it compare to the Pro Pointer? I have been considering one for my GTI 2500. I have watched videos on you tube of people using them and it seems to me that it acts like a minature version of your coil, and you can use the pinpoint mode with it and maybe give you more depth than the Pro Pointer. Am I correct in that assumption?

Amigo, please don't think I'm trying to be controversial, but my perception for the use of a pinpointer is to locate the item while in the process of recovery, ie., finding a dirt-colored coin or other small item either in the hole or in the already-dug dirt, that would be difficult to locate otherwise. It seems that a really deep pinpointer would defeat the purpose of precise location. I've only used the Pro Pointer for a year, and after being in this hobby for 42 years I don't think I'd leave home without it. It will pick up coin-sized objects at 2+ inches. HH. Jugg.

Thanks Jugghead for your response, I already have the ProPointer, and love it. I like the fact that the GI-1 sounds through your headphones and you don't have to carry extra 9v batteries. I think I am pretty good at digging plugs, but sometimes my Pro Pointer won't detect a coin within the plug I have dug. I do use the coin trick with my Pro Pointer and that seems to work pretty well, but its a pain sometimes as it takes precious hunting time away.

Light, I see your point. I've also had to re-scan a hole to see if the item is still there or in the plug. I rely somewhat on the vibrations of the Pro Pointer, and the sound is difficult to hear while using headphones. I misunderstood your post, thinking the depth thing was a big issue. HH. Jugg

When probing with the Pro-pointer, I just pull the headphone half-off of my good ear so I can hear pointer chirping. Works well enough for me being half-deaf..

The Sunray Probe is a excellent bit of kit, not available for my A T Pro but I have one on my MXT it adds a little bit of weight but is no big deal ( 11ounces)

You have no chance of losing it and the power comes from the detector, in my opinion the best of the best; and yes it is just like haviing a one inch

coil on your detector.

I have both but prefer the propointer. They both work well but I like the vibration. The added weight to the 2500 is also a consideration.
I think the propointer seems slightly more precise. Also I've forgotten to switch back to the main coil on more than one occasion.
I still use both, but find myself using the propointer more often. I use the sunray when I have someone tagging along and they use my 250, and the propointer.
Good to have a spare in my opinion.

The pro-pointer is the better deal. Hands down. The Sun Ray thing was a pain to use and remember to switch on and off. (Not to mention the added weight and extra cable hanging around.) Only my opinion.

[size=large]there is a vid on you tube that compares the probes. the sunray loses the contest as regards length of signal and finding the target in the wall. the pistol probe is a bit too much as far as i am concerned. the only drawback i concider to the garrett probe is the abilty to lose it. i for one don't throw it down when i'm done probing but have noticed on a number of you tube vids that others do lay them off to the side or toss them off to the side. good way to lose it. can't do that with the sunray. it's all a matter of what your willing to put up with. more weight on your machine or maybe losing the probe. i can't afford $134.00 a whack so i track mine real close. i also have to lose as much weight as possible. mcdave and i share the same procedure. we lift the headset off our good ears. you'd do well to find someone who has the sunray. maybe they'll let you try it out.

I have the sunray probes on both my garretts (1250&1350) I like having them attached, because I would forget my head if it wasn't! I does add extra weight and the extra cable also can be a pain when in the thick stuff.

I also have forgotten to switch back to the main coil, dog gone it!!!!!

I have not used a pro pointer. I would however recogmend it over the sunray for this reason. I have found for the sunray to work effectively on my garretts the pinpoint button needs to be held down while the probe is in use, this makes it kind of pain in the butt!

Having any probe is better than none in my opinion. So until I can replace the sunrays they'll do but I believe the pro pointer would be a better all around probe.

Steve :)

Ive been using the pro for 3 hunts now and can`t imagine being without it.

Well I love my ProPointer, sounds like I am going to just stick with it. That's me, always trying to find something better when what I have already is perfect. Thanks alot guys for all the feedback! This a great forum!

Go to the Sun Ray site and read my field test on their probe. It's a great pinpointer but I prefer the Garrett. It's a matter of personal choice. You can also read the field tests on the Pro-Pointer listed at the top of the page.
