Suggestions for cleaning this seated

Southwind

Well-known member
I found this coin a few months back and it looks to be in very good condition. I haven't touched it other than running water over it. It was found at a location that used to be an old watering hole stop along the Santa Fe Trail and it looks as if it may have sat in water for some time. It has like a backed on crusty film giving it and overall gray color. Would soaking it in olive oil help or hurt? Any other suggestion?

Thanks

Soaks might help but the only way I would clean that beauty is with a high power ultrasonic cleaner found in better jewelry and coin collector stores. Forget about the home jewelry cleaners.

Terry------Talk to a reputable coin shop concerning cleaning before you mess with (trying to clean) that beautiful coin.-----It may be they will advise you not to even attempt cleaning it.----Just a little advice from an old time ex-coin collector!:)-------BTW, congrats on that GREAT find.----------Del

Really dont think olive oil will have any positive effect as that's more beneficial on coppers and looks to already be down to bare metal albeit tarnished... that one is a beauty just the way it is,crisp detail... or weigh out if it would be worth having it professionally cleaned, which i have no experience with... good luck. ..

That baby could be worth up to $200. Haven't a clue how much professional cleaning is but I know I wouldn't do it myself.

Sweet coin you found -----------looks darn good just like that--------Now,you have a reason to attend a coin show!!!!--------GH -----------after1------------

That dime certainly never saw much circulation and "mother nature" sure was kind to it over the years:) I would leave it as is but then again I've never been a person that likes my finds spit-shined. Congrats on that find and HH!

I'd put it in a coin-flip, and send it to NGC to see what they say about it. Maybe have it conserved, graded and slabbed. It's a beauty. I suffer from OCD, though ...

Wow! What great condition that piece is in!
Congratulations.
I've been thinking about cleaning coins myself.
I would get a professional opinion about that coin, its in such nice shape.
For lesser coins, I might try soaking them in vinegar or silver polish for a bit.
You dont want to rub/polish much at all, you would be degrading the coin.
Happy hunting Kev
