Suggestion for those that have a Sunray S-1 probe and need a handheld pinpointer for another unit.

This week I have another high end metal detector being delivered but my big problem I got rid of my other pinpointers and now only have the S-1 inline probe.I know to get the most out of this other unit in the field I need a good pinpointer.Problem solved in theory, necessity is the mother of invention. My Sovereign is mounted on the rod assembly via the V clip with a slit cut through the blue bag which has a belt loop.My pinpointer the Sovereign in the old blue bag with the control box of the S-1 and Sovereign clipped together and carried in the blue bag and belt mounted. The probe could be carried in the trash pouch until needed.

Now that is thinking outside the box and taking "modding" to the next level! Great and unique idea. I've heard of guys using the Sunray Probe and a detector control box alone mounted on the hip to search walls inside houses and such for caches but you've put a nice slant on that idea. On the other hand, I'd just ask why not avoid all the trouble of new detectors and custom pinpointers all together but buying the Garrett ProPointer?

And no fair not telling us which new high end machine you bought! I'm guessing either Etrac or a Fisher. Don't tell me you went with one of those Visions or DFX machines. I wouldn't keep my Sovereign in the same house with one of those for fear it would sneak into the room at night and beat the crap out of one of those pansy detectors.

That is one of the reasons i use the Pocket uiprobe, i can use it on Etrac, Sovereign and F75, Excalibur and whites dual field when not in the water. Although i must say its on its last legs and am looking at the pistol probe to replace it as they are no longer available new. I also have a Sunray for the Etrac(old explorer 2 version painted black) but i hardly use it, especially as the box isn't even rainproof

Critterhunter, even though I have a DFX for sale its not for the Whites.I have a new Garrett 2500 GTI coming my way for a flip and would like to see how the imaging process works but I need a pinpointer.I had a Whites Bullseye and Pirate Probe that I got rid of wish I kept the Pirate Probe.I think the Sovereign setup will work for a temporary solution. Thanks HH Ron

Kered, the Detectorpro uniprobe would be my number one choice but at $315.00 expensive.I guess if someone sold their S-1 probe and headphones it would cut the cost in half. The Sunray works the best for the Sovereign than the other units. But if you have other detectors one good probe may be better and less expensive way. Thanks HH Ron.

Ron,

The S-1 Probe can be taken off the switching box and put directly in to the Sovereign control box as this is what i had did when the Explorers came out and there was no X-1 probes yet. The second option is what you are saying the Uni Probe that is built into the headphones as this is what I have for the detectors That I try out and really like this one and the headphone them self's are some of the best I have used. The third option is the Garrett Pro pinpointer as this one is the best hand held probe i have seen of the stand alone probes as it will signal a tone not so high pitched that some of us cant hear as we get older plus it vibrates too. Depth is better than a person expects and a price that seems reasonable too.

Good luck with the 2500, I tried a couple and they were no match for my Sovereigns and my type of coin hunting.

Rick

Mine is not the headphone version, but the pocket version, controls are in a small black box with speaker(not very loud) and headpnone jack, the probe bit is the same as the one on the headphone model
pocket uniprobe
I plug a one sided earpiece in the jack and hang it inside my sunray headphones, works a treat

I also had the S-1 but sold it with the elite

Rick,I'll try the Sovereign with just the probe plug in(better idea less weight) and power up as needed. The 2500 is a flip but would like to try out before selling. Thanks Ron

I'm highly critical of detectors and probes. On that note, I'll tell you that I love the ProPointer even compared to the Sunray Probes I used on a few of my Explorers, and that I did not care for the GTI series one bit. While I never owned one I did test them fairly extensively before deciding to purchase. The "sweet spot" at extreme depth under the coil is VERY tight. Move the target off just a hair and you lose it. I'm not talking about the target becoming a junk sound or target ID, I'm talking about it going away to where you do not even hear it anymore. Many machines I've oned (particularly the QXT) will at least give a low tone if you just nick the edge of a target with the coil, even at the fringe edge of the coil and still at good depth. On the GTI is was gone in a flash even moving as little as half an inch off target center. No sound or nothing. Remember, I'm talking at the very fringe of detection depth. Do some air tests on that and tell me if you found the same thing to be true or not. Also, sizing slots were not anything new or impressive to me when they came out. The QXT has a flowing sizing display which is very much more versatile at defining target shape and image. Having the machine decide which "slot" it should stick a target seemed a step back in technology to me and not something new that should be raved about. The XLT has a different form of "signal bars" which are NOT the same as the sizing bars on the QXT. Just one of many things that made the much cheaper QXT a much better and deeper unit than the XLT IMHO.
