Suggestion for Minelab Forum

New member
A lot of good information gets exchanged on these forums and a lot of good questions get answered.

But, I have a suggestion: What if Minelab had their experts answer some of these questions directly here on the forum.

If they did, the CTX users would be getting the definitive answers straight from the experts at Minelab.

And, yes I know that some of the people from Minelab have occasionally answered questions on this forum. But, when they do, they don't always identify themselves as being from Minelab. If we knew we were getting an answer directly from Minelab, we'd know we were getting the definitive answer to the question.

It would be nice to hear right from them. On the other hand though, I feel that most if not every worthwhile question that has been asked has been answered fairly well without their extra input. Which I don't mean in a condescending way at all, but just that we have a very smart community here ( I don't count my self as one of them though ) that does fine on their own.

Gary I count you as one of the real experts on here, along with CTTodd, I have learned much from your two's posts and many others!

I also agree that it would be great to hear from the experts at Minelab. However, a possible example of why the Minelab experts don't participate can be found in the "Question on Ground Balance" thread. I personally appreciate all positive comments that are posted with the intent of increasing the enjoyment & understanding of our hobby.

I don't know what you consider a Minelab expert. But I doubt you will see anyone working for Minelab answering questions on this forum or any other forum. I know some who read this one. But again, I doubt you see them post. Making yourself available to thousands of users can be very time consuming. I have never been employed by Minelab. But having been involved "early on" with several Minelab products, and starting both the X-TERRA and CTX forums, I know how time consuming (responding to posts) can be. With that said, there are quite a few "CTX savvy" people who have contributed to this forum. Some continue to participate on a regular basis. Others, for a variety of reasons, no longer participate on a regular basis.

If I could offer a couple pieces of advice to those who might be new to this forum, it would be to look through the thousands of posts that have already been made, and don't hesitate to use the SEARCH function for specific questions. Who knows? You may find your question has already been answered by one of the "CTX savvy" people who have contributed to this forum. HH Randy

Randy has sound advice about doing search of posts. I have done that here and the results have been very beneficial. What I have done in the past and continue to do is to copy significant posts and print them off for future use. I had done that for the E-Trac and now for the CTX.

If you have a good dealer you can go see them or call them. That is what we are here for! ;)

I am not bashing Minelab, but I don't think that anyone there actually use these machines...they would undoubtedlly be able to tell you how the circuits work, but I think that the experience of some of the guys on here enables them to offer more practical help.

I recently got the CTX and Digger and HarryH helped me and explained things a lot better than anything Minelab could provide...if someone from Minelab were to answer questions I think it would be as confusing as their instructions that you get with the machine.

Thanks again to Harry and Digger

First off, thanks for the kind words. It is nice to hear when explanations have been beneficial. I would agree that an engineer's explanation is not always easy to understand. As an example, here is Bruce Candy's explanation of Multi-period Sine-waves.......from an article titled "Metal Detector Basics and Theory" in the Knowledge base on Minelab's website......

http://www.minelab.com/__files/f/11043/METAL%20DETECTOR%20BASICS%20AND%20THEORY.pdf

This was written in regard to the relationships between R and X, in magnetic mineralized soils at different frequencies. Bruce Candy is well known throughout the world for his expertise in electronics. But having become familiar with some of his writings...there is no doubt that his train of thought is WAY above me! What I might have said, had I been asked the question, would be that the CTX selects the transmit frequencies which provide the most accurate response, regardless of mineralization, in just about every place you will hunt. With that said, it is always good to get an engineer's perspective. But as I posted earlier, there are a lot of savvy CTX users on this forum. Take advantage of what each have to offer. I know of 3 who are and I do believe they sign an agreement on what they can say as an employee. Very, Very limited. Sometimes silence is the best way I believe, a perfect example would be the event several years ago when a Minelab employee did a video on the use of the Sovereign GT. Great video but the sharper GT users (here on the sovereign forum) seen a misleading statement, the video was pulled and the rest is history. I do believe there are no better teachers then those who use the machines everyday and share this information on the forum here....

I checked that link ...and although the sine waves and their contribution to detecting is complicated ( I remember the difficulty I had in College with precalculus) the text is actually fairly easy to read and understand....it has actually made sense of Minelab instructions for the CTX and understand that a little bit better...thank you for posting it...it is worth at least a quick look to get some better insight on how these things do actually perform

Plug plug Bart! The question is... Would you knowingly go out of your way to help a CTX user that didnt buy ftom
You? If so, then i surely agree. I just wish Minelab would read the CTX feature wishlist thread!!! Updates are a disappointment after a that marketing it . Memories dont fade!

Although new here and to the CTX, I felt most qualified to chime in on this topic. About me, I do have a degree in engineering and and by employment must, on a yearly basis, complete annual recert courses that are job specific ( electrical generation) , I am also the average consumer, and consider myself to know a little...about a lot.
From a smart consumer standpoint, I did research the CTX and have been out with GKman, who not only uses a CTX, but has a passion for this sport beyond most. Truth be told, I purchased mine because I liked how the CTX intrigued GK after a full life of detecting. However, you have to admit from a business standpoint, the sale of detectors is a narrow market as opposed to TV's, computers,1000 dollar smartphones we all have or a TV commercial every 10 min about crap I've never heard of or will ever use, yet the companies promote their products to us. If WE the intelligent ones were to invest in a business I would think we would be sure that the product description, the products capability, and a clear description on how to use and enjoy the produce would be bold and clear. Sounds to me that Minelab needs to step up the public relations and consumer education end of business with clear, concise ( average Joe) user guides. I know I'm now rambling, but if I were to own mine lab or to be a stockholder I would want people to be standing in line for one like they do for the iPhone.
Having said my piece, I'm now going out for the second time with the CTX and attempt to get the most out of this machine with a homemade 40 page notebook of advice and pointers, not from minelab, but from you folks......and for that I thank you.
