Suggestion. Agree or Disagree.

[size=medium]There are a lot of people who have a lot of great finds. Many of these finds have some great stories behind them and many of these people are great story writers. However, some of the stories get kind of hard to read because of their length. They are written in one long rambling paragraph.

My suggestion is that if you have a long story, break it up into smaller paragraphs and hit the enter key an extra time to get a blank line between paragraphs, like this entry is written. This will make it much easier on the eyes to follow and easier to get back to if you have to look away from your computer screen for any reason.

As interesting as it may be, I know that if I open a forum entry that's all one paragraph and it takes up the entire screen, chances are I won't read it as it's too easy to get lost among all the maze of words. It just looks too busy, cluttered and disoriented, even though it isn't.

I know everyone has their own writing style and I'm not trying to change that. I'm just trying to get across the fact that its much easier to read a group of short paragraphs rather than one long one.

I personally like to pre-write my longer entries using "Notepad". This allows me to check my spelling and be sure everything is included that I wanted to say. I then copy and paste the entry into the forum.

Agreed Mat, but perhaps not everyone is savvy enough to write in such an eloquent manner mate. The point is, that we encourage our mates to share. I agree that the format you mentioned IS easier to read and perhaps I'm guilty of a touch of ramble. The MOST important thing is that they DO share, wouldn't you agree mates?

I agree with Gulf Hunter. Just post your stories and finds and don't worry about the really petty stuff. Were here to have fun by sharing photos and stories not to be judged because someone does not like our penmanship. JMHO HH Dennis in Idaho

If you read my post more closely you will see that I'm not judging anyone, nor am I saying anything about anyones penmanship. Don't go putting words where they don't exist. I'm only SUGGESTING, not CRITICIZING like you are doing.

My post was carefully written so as to not offend or insult anyone, but I can see that there are some hot heads who will just write anything to stir the pot and get their names on the forum.

Mat in MA,

The forum is full of a great bunch of guys and gals just sharing their knowledge and finds. Please don't be offended by some of us just having some fun. And that's all it is, FUN !!!! I for one am not known for my penmanship. :detecting:

I am not a hot head, nor am I stirring the pot, nor am I just writing something just to get my name on the forum which by the way has been here longer than yours which is not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination, its just that I was just answering your question which was, Suggestion. Agree or Disagree? Obviously I disagreed and told you why, so what is wrong with that? Are you offended that I did not agree with you? If you are I am sorry, its just the way I feel about it, and on another note school was out for many of us over 40 or 50 years ago. I would just hate to see someone put off writting their treasure story because they did not happen to know the proper way to write it. You know what I mean? JMHO HH Dennis in Idaho

make it long or make it short................do not worry with spelling either

post up a few pics or 3 or so...............90% just want to see the loot................good, bad, great or whatever

can be a klondike, a skunk, a solid hot goose, a nitro - we will figure it out

just post it up so we can see how everyone is making out all around the great land

good luck and get back out there - go visit the surfgod

I don't care about sentence structure, or spelling, but let me tell you, reading one long, continuous paragraph is not something I look forward to, even when the storyline is superb! I find myself just "trying to get through it."

But paragraphs are good for ANYBODY, regardless of writing style.

Now; let's see some more good stuff! I plan to contribute soon.

I am not going to read the responses so if anyone already said it I am sorry.

When writting and a subject gets changed then a diff. paragraph is in order.

School is so long ago but I can still remember a few things......I tend to seperate with the dots......like this.......its a hard habit to break.

I also have a diff. browser I can use that has spell check with it, but I don't use it much, but it is nice but it takes me forever to try and retype, trying to figure out the correct spelling......Like most say....we know what you ment.....No time for spell check! so littlre time so manty postes! :stars:

GraveDigger, your message was very easy for me to read. We all don't have 20/20 and when the writer uses paragraphs or blank lines it much more enjoyable to read.

I can't see that it would hurt to add an extra space every now and then if it makes things easier to read. I'm a storyteller by nature so some of my posts get pretty long, especially if the person isn't big on reading. Good idea, Mat.

Thanks,

BDA:cool:
(you may want avoid some of my short stories at the Royal's 20th Century Tales part of this forum as they're really long)

I agree that your idea would make it easier to read, especially for those of us who are older. I know that my vision sure isn't what it used to be and even with glasses things start to run together after a bit. But whether or not posts are written with short paragraphs I will continue to read them because I know that the people who post have put their thoughts down and they are worth every word to me. I love reading about their experiences and wish I could be there with each and every one of them, including you, Mat. So although I agree with your point of view I also realize that, education aside, sometimes people are just so enthusiastic and excited about their finds that they probably get into a kind of trance when writing about them and their words just start flowing without thought to proper composition.

As to your other post, I think you're getting upset about nothing. I surely didn't read anything that leads me to believe that anyone was being insulting. And you did title your post as a suggestion. Some will agree and some will not. Don't get upset with those who don't. Just be happy that you get to enjoy such a wonderful hobby and have so many friends who share it with you. Best to you.
Jerry

This is nether a literacy or English writing forum. Please save your lessons on those subjects for that venue. If you have something to contribute to looting post it and try to keep on subject.
